In a remarkable and courageous feat, Dr. Saptadeep Das made a life-saving decision in the midnight hours on Monday that rescued an expectant mother and her twin babies from a dire situation. Parul Devi Jamatia, a resident of Chittamara, was brought to the hospital in a critical condition with severe labor pains. She was found to be carrying twin babies in breech positions, a challenging circumstance that demanded immediate attention.

Describing the urgency of the situation, Dr. Das stated, “The pregnant lady was in a severe critical condition, and as a doctor, I had to make a bold decision with the consent of our staff nurses.” Dr. Kamal Reang, Chief Medical Officer of Gomati District, added that such complex deliveries are uncommon at the primary health center level. However, the decision was made to avoid endangering Parul Devi and her babies further by transferring her to an upper hospital in the middle of the night.

The delivery process posed significant challenges, given the breech positions of both babies. One baby was in complete breech position with its feet down and head up, while the other was in a footling breech position, having one foot down on the mother’s uterus. Despite the complexity and time-consuming nature of the procedure, the medical team managed to safely deliver the twin girls.

Dr. Das recounted, “It was a challenging situation for us, especially at the primary health center level. The staff nurses showed immense courage.” The delivery process took around 4-5 hours, culminating in the birth of the twin babies at approximately 6:15 am. Both infants weighed more than 2.5 kg each and were found to be in good health.

Dr. Das emphasized that all necessary precautions were taken to ensure the safety of the mother and babies in the postnatal period. They benefited from programs such as the Janani Shishu Suraksha Yojana and Janani Suraksha Yojana, and the twins received their mother’s first breast milk within an hour of birth. Additionally, birth dose vaccinations were administered to the newborns.

Parul Devi expressed her happiness and relief, which was evident in her smile as she embraced her two children. The prompt and courageous actions of the medical team, led by Dr. Saptadeep Das, not only saved lives but also exemplified the dedication and commitment of healthcare professionals in ensuring the well-being of mothers and newborns, even in the face of challenging circumstances.
