In an effort to showcase the cultural and traditional significance of Tripura and promote tourism in the region, the Tripura Tourism Department under Minister Sushanta Choudhury, has taken a significant step towards the beautification and development of Unakoti, popularly known as the “Angkor Wat of North-East.”

Minister Sushanta Choudhury visited the renowned tourist attraction, Unakoti, on Tuesday to discuss special plans for its enhancement. During the meeting with concerned officials, he unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at transforming Unakoti into a major tourist hotspot on the global stage.

Choudhury revealed that the project of beautification and development of Unakoti, as well as the reopening and beautification of the abandoned Sonamukhi tea plantation, has received substantial financial backing of Rs 140 crore from the Asian Development Bank. This financial support is set to play a crucial role in making Tripura an attractive destination for tourists worldwide.

The tourism minister expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that several similar initiatives are in the pipeline, with work expected to commence shortly. The goal is to draw tourists to lesser-known but captivating destinations scattered across the state, showcasing Tripura’s diverse cultural heritage and natural beauty.

As part of the development plan, the project will include the construction of a three-star hotel, a spacious resort, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, and a picturesque park in the abandoned Sonamukhi tea garden near Unakoti. These additions aim to provide visitors with enhanced amenities and experiences, making their trip to the region even more enjoyable.

During his visit, Minister Choudhury was accompanied by MLA Brijit Sinha from Kailasahar Assembly Constituency, former MLA Mobaswar Ali, Uttam Kumar Chakma, Secretary of the Tourism Department, Tapan Kumar Das, Director of Tripura Tourism Development Corporation Limited, and Tarit Kanti Chakma, the District Magistrate of Unakoti district, among other officials.

The government’s concerted efforts to promote tourism through these initiatives are expected to not only boost the economy but also shine a spotlight on Tripura’s rich cultural heritage, attracting visitors from various parts of the world to explore the hidden treasures of this enchanting region.
