Tension runs palpable in Kailasahar where an ABVP leader Shibaji Sengupta was stabbed on Friday in broad daylight. Despite tension and 144 CrPC in force students belonging to the ABVP took to roads on Saturday and demanded arrest of the assailants within 48 hours. The students threatened that they would resort to wider agitation if the arrest was not done within given time.
Meantime, Kailashahar Police arrested one person today for his alleged involvement in breaking down a bamboo-made boundary wall of Kali Temple at Laxmipur Gram Panchayat.
Both the incident sparked serious resentment and communal tension in the sub-division and the administration clamped Section 144 last night in Kailashahar sub-division.
Shivaji Sengupta was stabbed by miscreants on Friday evening near Kailashahar Police station. Assistant secretary of ABVP, Kailashahar unit Anup Kanti Majumder lodged a specific complaint against some persons. The accused persons belong to different parties including BJP, but all of them belong to a particular community.
“As Police failed to arrest the culprits, we have resorted to road blockade in front of the Kailashahar PS today. We are condemning the Police inaction and demanding immediate arrest of the miscreants”, ABVP activists said.
Defying Section 144, the blockade continued for more than three hours – and later, Minister Bhagaban Das reached the spot and held discussion with the agitating ABVP supporters. He told them that it was decided in a meeting with District SP, DM and other high officials that the culprits would be arrested soon.
Even as ABVP activists agreed to withdraw the road blockade, they gave the administration 48 hours for arresting the culprits. ABVP also held a rally in support of their demand.
Minister Bhagaban Das went to the house of Shivaji Sengupta and met his mother as well as other relatives.
