For the 20 Urban Local Bodies elections this time ruling BJP gave priority to women and young party workers as the poll candidates. The BJP  announced its candidate list on Saturday. In Agartala Municipal Council the ruling party nominated all but one candidate. The name for the Ward 5 was kept in abeyance.

Addressing a press conference, BJP state president Dr. Manik Saha has announced the candidates for the 51 wards of Agartala Municipal Corporation and six Nagar Panchayats while spokesman Subrata Chakraborty announced the names of the candidates for 13 municipal councils. The duo was accompanied by the party’s central observer to Tripura Vinod Sonkar.

Among the notables, the list included Dipak Majumder (ward- 16), Ratna Dutta (ward- 22) and Alok Bhattacharjee (ward- 21). As it seemed, the party will contest the polls with projecting a candidate for the position of Mayor although the candidate for the ward no- 5 is yet to be finalized.

Total 20 Urban Local Bodies– 13 Municipal Councils, six Nagar Panchayats and Agartala Municipal Corporation—will go to polls on November 25 next and the results will be declared on November 28 next.

A total of 5,94,772 voters— 2,93,979 males, 3,07,077 and 16 others—are eligible to cast their votes in these elections but what seemed unique was that the female voters outnumbered the total male voters in the urban areas. Polling will take place in 770 polling stations across the state.

According to State Election Commission sources, there are total 334 constituencies in the 20 urban Local Bodies, out of which eight are reserved for Scheduled Tribes, 85 constituencies are reserved for Scheduled Castes and 157 constituencies are reserved for women.
