Four persons who had been on Friday announced guilty for Bodhisatta Das murder were given life imprisonment by the session court on Saturday . The court not only handed down life imprisonment to four individuals but also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each for the murder of the bank official, Bodhisatta Das, in August 2019. The District and Session Judge of West Tripura District, Subhasish Sharma Roy, convicted Sumit Bank, Sumit Chowdhury, Sukanta Biswas, and Omar Sharif, also known as Shoaib Mia, for the killing, which occurred during an altercation in Agartala.

According to the prosecution lawyer, Samrat Kar Bhowmik, the incident took place on the intervening night of August 3-4, 2019, following an argument over urinating on the roadside. Both the victim and the accused were intoxicated at the time. The trial in the case lasted over three years, during which 56 witnesses came forward to provide their testimony.

During the trial, two witnesses, Basu Kar and Dr. Abhijit Das of GBP Hospital’s trauma center, turned hostile. Kar Bhowmik stated that separate proceedings would be initiated against them for providing false testimony.

Sukanta Biswas, one of the convicted individuals, was a traffic police sub-inspector, while the others were traders. Following the court’s verdict, defence lawyer Pijush Kanti Biswas expressed dissatisfaction and announced plans to file an appeal against the district court’s decision in the Tripura High Court.

The court’s ruling signifies an important step towards delivering justice in this tragic incident, providing closure to the victim’s family and underscoring the importance of accountability in such cases.
