Tripura BJP president Abhishek Debroy rejected CPI(M) allegations that opposition candidates were obstructed from filing nominations for municipal and Nagar Panchayat elections. He accused the Left party of organisational weakness and urged BJP candidates to prioritise public service and grassroots engagement.

With political activities intensifying ahead of the upcoming municipal and Nagar Panchayat elections in Tripura, BJP State president Abhishek Debroy has strongly rejected allegations that opposition candidates were prevented from filing nomination papers, accusing the CPI(M) of attempting to hide its organisational weaknesses through what he described as baseless political claims.

Addressing reporters on Saturday, Debroy said the Left party was repeatedly making allegations against the ruling BJP to create a negative impression among voters. He claimed that the opposition was trying to divert public attention from its declining organisational strength at the grassroots level by blaming the ruling party for its electoral difficulties.

Responding to allegations that CPI(M) candidates had faced obstacles while submitting nomination papers in certain urban local body areas, the BJP state president maintained that the administration was prepared to provide adequate security wherever required. He asserted that the nomination process had proceeded without difficulties in several parts of the state, where opposition candidates had successfully submitted their papers.

Citing examples from different locations, Debroy pointed out that CPI(M) candidates had filed nominations in Belonia, Udaipur, Sonamura and Melaghar. Questioning the opposition’s allegations, he asked why the party was claiming obstruction in certain places when its candidates had participated in the nomination process without facing difficulties in other areas.

According to Debroy, the opposition’s electoral challenges were primarily connected to its weakening local-level organisation rather than any alleged political interference. He claimed that the CPI(M) leadership had gradually lost contact with grassroots workers in several regions, creating difficulties in mobilising supporters and identifying suitable candidates for the upcoming civic elections.

Taking a dig at senior Left leaders, the BJP president suggested that instead of making allegations against political opponents, opposition leaders should concentrate on rebuilding their organisation through direct engagement with people. He said public support could not be secured merely through accusations and that political parties needed sustained efforts and meaningful engagement with voters to earn people’s confidence.

Debroy further argued that the strength of any political organisation depended on its grassroots presence and the trust of the public. He maintained that if people were unwilling to associate themselves with a particular political party, the responsibility for such a situation could not simply be transferred to political rivals.

Apart from responding to the opposition’s allegations, the BJP state president also addressed party candidates preparing to contest the municipal and Nagar Panchayat elections. He reminded them that winning an election should not be considered the ultimate objective of political work.

According to Debroy, the responsibility of elected representatives begins after securing victory, as they must remain continuously connected with residents and work towards addressing their everyday concerns. He urged BJP candidates and party workers to maintain humility, accessibility and a service-oriented approach while performing their political responsibilities.

He also emphasised that elected representatives should remain approachable to ordinary citizens and respond sincerely to local problems. Maintaining regular communication with communities, understanding public grievances and ensuring effective service delivery should remain priorities for every candidate, he said.

Calling upon BJP workers to strengthen their commitment to public welfare, Debroy urged them to draw inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and governance model. He stressed that public service and people’s welfare should remain at the centre of the party’s political activities.

The BJP president’s remarks come amid growing political activity across Tripura ahead of the municipal and Nagar Panchayat elections. The nomination phase has witnessed allegations and counter-allegations between the ruling BJP and opposition parties, particularly over claims concerning the filing of nomination papers.

While the CPI(M) has raised concerns about alleged difficulties faced by its candidates in certain areas, the BJP has rejected the accusations and maintained that the opposition’s problems reflect organisational weaknesses.

With political parties intensifying their preparations for the upcoming urban local body elections, the debate over nomination procedures, political competition and grassroots organisation is becoming an important part of Tripura’s evolving electoral atmosphere.
