Security agencies recovered goods worth nearly Rs. 50 lakh during a joint raid at Rahimpur Market in Tripura’s border area. The crackdown involved police, BSF, Customs and the sub-divisional administration following the recent assault on BSF personnel at Ashabari.

Security agencies launched a major crackdown at Rahimpur Market on Saturday, recovering goods estimated to be worth nearly Rs. 50 lakh after breaking open 11 shops and warehouses suspected of being used for storing commodities allegedly intended for illegal transportation across the India-Bangladesh international border.

The joint operation was conducted by the Border Security Force (BSF), police, Customs officials and the Sonamura Sub-Divisional Administration. The crackdown came days after an assault on BSF personnel at Ashabari, bringing renewed attention to border security and suspected smuggling activities in the region. Meanwhile, one more woman was arrested in connection with the Ashabari incident.

According to sources, the operation was initiated following specific intelligence inputs received by the BSF regarding suspected stockpiles of goods in Rahimpur Market. During the searches, security personnel recovered firecrackers, biscuits and various other commodities from the identified premises.

However, the administration has not yet formally confirmed whether the recovered goods were connected to cross-border smuggling. Officials have also not disclosed details regarding the ownership of the seized commodities.

A sizeable BSF contingent participated in the operation. Among the senior officers present were 49th Battalion Commanding Officer Ajit Kumar, Second-in-Command, Ashabari Company Commander Rohit Kumar and Rahimpur Company Commander Amar Chan. Personnel from the police, Customs Department and Sonamura Sub-Divisional Administration also joined the coordinated searches.

The operation began at around 11 am and continued until approximately 4 pm. According to local sources, BSF personnel had reportedly identified certain warehouses by marking their shutters with names and cross symbols before the searches commenced. Subsequently, security personnel broke open the locks and shutters of the identified shops and warehouses in the presence of the market committee secretary.

The extensive security deployment and searches created considerable tension in the locality. Rahimpur Market reportedly remained largely deserted during the operation as traders and residents watched the developments.

The crackdown has attracted particular attention because of its timing following the recent Ashabari incident, in which BSF personnel were assaulted. The incident had raised concerns about the security situation along the international border and the challenges faced by security forces in preventing illegal activities in border areas.

Investigators are now expected to examine the ownership of the recovered goods and determine the purpose for which the commodities were stored. Authorities are also likely to investigate whether the seized stock was connected to any organised network involved in transporting goods illegally across the international border into Bangladesh.

The seizure of commodities worth nearly Rs. 50 lakh has further highlighted concerns over suspected illegal storage and the movement of goods through trading centres located near the border.

Although the alleged smuggling connection remains subject to investigation, the joint operation reflects intensified coordination among security agencies and the local administration to strengthen border surveillance and prevent unauthorised cross-border activities.

Further details regarding the seized commodities, ownership of the premises and possible involvement of individuals are awaited as the investigation progresses.
