Three major works of India’s literary and intellectual heritage including Kalhana’s Rajatarangini, the Mahabharata and Kautilya’s Arthashastra have been included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Regional Register for Asia and the Pacific. The decision was taken at the 11th session of the register held in Jakarta, Indonesia. With this recognition, India’s total number of inscriptions in the regional register has risen to six. The three works represent different aspects of India’s knowledge traditions. Rajatarangini is a historical account of Kashmir, the Mahabharata explores Dharma, duty and human values, while Arthashastra deals with governance, diplomacy and statecraft. This recognition is a matter of pride for India’s civilisational continuity, its rich knowledge traditions and its contribution to the world. The development was announced by Member Secretary, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi which played an important role in preparing the nomination dossiers for all three works.
