BJP and Tipra Motha have agreed to jointly contest Tripura’s November 27 civic elections, including Agartala Municipal Corporation and other urban local bodies. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath chaired alliance discussions, with seat-sharing negotiations expected to conclude after BJP’s working committee meeting.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ally Tipra Motha have agreed to jointly contest the forthcoming urban local body elections in Tripura, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), municipal councils and nagar panchayats scheduled for November 27. However, the two parties are yet to finalise their seat-sharing arrangement, with a decision expected following the BJP’s internal discussions.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the development after chairing an important meeting between the leadership of the BJP and Tipra Motha at Rajya Atithi Shala Sonartari in Agartala on Sunday. The discussions primarily focused on strengthening NDA unity and preparing a coordinated strategy for the upcoming civic elections.
Sharing details of the meeting, Nath said both parties had discussed contesting the elections together under the NDA alliance. He described the discussions as cordial and productive, expressing confidence that mutual coordination and collective efforts would strengthen the alliance and help it secure greater public support.
Nath further stated that Tipra Motha had submitted its proposals regarding seat-sharing. The BJP leadership would examine the proposals at the party level before communicating its final decision. According to him, the decision was expected by Monday night.
The meeting was attended by Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath and BJP state general secretary Bipin Debbarma on behalf of the BJP. Tipra Motha was represented by MLAs Ranjit Debbarma, Purnachandra Jamatia and other senior party leaders.
Speaking after the meeting, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma confirmed that his party was prepared to contest the forthcoming municipal council and nagar panchayat elections across Tripura as part of the NDA arrangement.
He said Tipra Motha had placed its seat-sharing proposals before the BJP leadership but declined to disclose the exact number of seats demanded by the regional party.
Ranjit Debbarma maintained that Tipra Motha expected a respectable share of seats, particularly in areas where the party has an established organisational presence and believes it has a strong possibility of fielding competitive candidates.

He added that the allocation of seats among the alliance partners across different municipal areas and nagar panchayats would be finalised after the BJP’s working committee meeting scheduled for Monday.
The two parties have also held preliminary discussions regarding coordination during the nomination process. According to Ranjit Debbarma, both sides discussed the possibility of ensuring that their respective candidates could submit nomination papers on the same day to facilitate a coordinated electoral exercise.
The proposed joint contest follows Tipra Motha’s earlier indication that it intended to continue its association with the NDA in the upcoming municipal elections. The regional party had previously contested the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections in alliance with the BJP.
Following internal discussions within Tipra Motha, representatives of both parties arranged the latest meeting to discuss the continuation of their electoral partnership and the distribution of seats.
Meanwhile, BJP Tripura Pradesh president Abhishek Debroy reiterated his party’s willingness to contest the forthcoming urban local body elections with its NDA allies. Speaking about candidate selection, he said priority would be given to young people who were willing to take up leadership responsibilities.

The November 27 elections will cover the Agartala Municipal Corporation, other municipal councils and nagar panchayats across the state. The final seat-sharing arrangement is expected to determine which NDA partner will field candidates in individual municipal areas and wards.
With both parties agreeing in principle to fight the civic elections together, attention has now shifted to the outcome of the BJP’s internal deliberations and the final seat-sharing formula. The arrangement will be crucial in shaping the NDA’s electoral strategy for the upcoming urban local body polls in Tripura.
