Eight INDIA Bloc constituents in Tripura organised a joint rally in Agartala against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, raising concerns over voter rights, electoral transparency and democratic institutions while calling for unity to protect constitutional principles.
Tripura’s opposition parties intensified their campaign over electoral rights and transparency on Friday, as leaders and supporters of eight INDIA Bloc constituents organised a joint protest rally across Agartala, raising concerns over the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the protection of citizens’ voting rights.
The rally was organised under the broader campaign to defend the Constitution, safeguard democracy and ensure free and fair elections. Leaders and supporters from different opposition parties participated in the demonstration, which attracted attention for its decision to carry the national Tricolour instead of individual party flags. Opposition leaders described the move as a symbol of unity among democratic forces beyond party affiliations.
The demonstration brought together representatives of the CPI(M), Congress and other opposition constituents. Senior opposition leaders, including former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Ashish Kumar Saha and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, participated in the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Jitendra Chaudhury said the rally represented a collective effort by democratic forces to protect constitutional principles and citizens’ electoral rights. Drawing parallels with India’s freedom movement, he said political and ideological differences could be set aside when larger democratic values required collective action.
Chaudhury argued that the right to vote was a fundamental element of democratic participation and expressed concern that eligible voters could face difficulties if their names were excluded from electoral rolls during the revision process. He maintained that electoral reforms and administrative procedures must ensure that every eligible citizen could exercise their franchise without unnecessary obstacles.
The CPI(M) leader also referred to previous civic elections in Tripura, alleging that opposition candidates had encountered difficulties at different stages of the nomination process. He said a democratic electoral system required a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.
Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Ashish Kumar Saha described the agitation as part of a wider campaign to defend democratic institutions, constitutional values and citizens’ rights. He alleged that concerns surrounding voter inclusion and electoral roll revision had created uncertainty among sections of the electorate.
Saha said the INDIA Bloc intended to continue mobilising public opinion and expanding its campaign beyond traditional party supporters. According to him, people from different social backgrounds, including students and young voters, were increasingly participating in discussions concerning electoral transparency and democratic accountability.
Senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman also questioned the functioning of constitutional and investigative institutions, alleging that several important institutions were increasingly becoming subjects of political controversy. He stressed the importance of institutional independence and accountability in maintaining public confidence in the democratic system.
Throughout the rally, opposition speakers repeatedly emphasised the need for stronger coordination among INDIA Bloc constituents. They maintained that the campaign was not limited to a state-level political demonstration but formed part of a broader national effort concerning constitutional safeguards, electoral rights and democratic institutions.
The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has emerged as a major issue for opposition parties in Tripura. The Election Commission’s revision exercise involves updating voter records, while opposition leaders have raised concerns about the possibility of eligible voters being excluded. They have called for transparency, proper verification and adequate safeguards throughout the process.
The opposition alliance had earlier announced its intention to submit a memorandum to the Chief Electoral Officer in Tripura, placing its concerns and demands before the election authorities. The October 30 demonstration was part of that announced campaign.

The INDIA Bloc leaders said they would continue their efforts to raise awareness about voter rights and electoral procedures. They also appealed to citizens and democratic organisations to remain attentive to the revision process and ensure that eligible voters’ interests were protected.
The rally concluded with renewed calls for opposition unity, constitutional accountability and transparency in the electoral system. The participating leaders reiterated that protecting citizens’ voting rights and maintaining public confidence in democratic institutions would remain central issues in their campaign in the coming months.
