Tripura Police has sent a team to Delhi to bring Amir Shokeen to Agartala in connection with an alleged racial abuse video involving a Tripura youth. A Delhi court sent the accused to one-day judicial custody as the investigation continues.

A team of Tripura Police has reached Delhi to initiate legal proceedings for bringing social media content creator Amir Shokeen to Agartala in connection with an alleged racial abuse case involving a youth from Tripura. Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Friday sent Shokeen to one-day judicial custody after his arrest by Delhi Police.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha confirmed on Friday that the state government had initiated the process of bringing the accused to Tripura for further investigation. He said he had contacted Tripura Director General of Police G. S. Rao after learning about the arrest and instructed him to coordinate with Delhi Police to facilitate the transfer in accordance with legal procedures.

The case relates to a video circulating on social media that allegedly shows a youth from Tripura being subjected to racial slurs, verbal abuse and humiliating treatment. The video triggered widespread public concern and demands for appropriate legal action.

According to Tripura Police, an FIR was registered at the New Capital Complex (NCC) Police Station in West Tripura district on October 22. The case invokes relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Tripura DGP G. S. Rao said the video had come to his notice on Wednesday afternoon. He subsequently contacted senior Delhi Police officials, including the Special Police Unit for the North Eastern Region, to coordinate action over the incident.

Preliminary information indicated that the video was allegedly recorded in Ahmedabad approximately one month before it circulated widely online. Police have also identified the person suspected of uploading the video, and the investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding its recording, publication and alleged content.

Delhi court proceedings

Shokeen was arrested by Delhi Police on October 22 from the Karol Bagh area following an investigation into the viral video. He was subsequently produced before a duty magistrate at the Tis Hazari Courts complex on Friday.

According to reports, Delhi Police sought six days of police custody for further interrogation. However, Shokeen’s lawyer opposed the request. The duty magistrate directed that the accused be produced before the competent court for consideration of the custody application and remanded him to one-day judicial custody in the meantime. He was scheduled to be produced before the concerned court again on Saturday.

Tripura Police representatives were not present before the court during Friday’s proceedings. The state police team is coordinating with Delhi Police to complete the necessary legal formalities for transferring the accused to Tripura. Officials have indicated that further steps will depend on the applicable procedures and the outcome of the ongoing proceedings.

The investigation has drawn attention to concerns about alleged racial discrimination against people from Northeast India. The Tripura Students Forum Delhi also approached police authorities, seeking an impartial investigation and preservation of electronic evidence related to the video.

Tripura Police said the investigation would proceed in coordination with Delhi Police and in accordance with the law. The allegations against Shokeen remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
