Tripura CM Manik Saha said the State Election Commission (SEC) would decide on central armed police forces deployment for upcoming local body elections after meeting Left leaders. He also criticised the opposition INDIA bloc over its political alliances and allegations.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Friday said the State Election Commission (SEC) would decide on security arrangements for the upcoming local body elections, including the deployment of central forces, following a meeting with a delegation of Left leaders.

Speaking to reporters after a programme, Dr Saha said he had advised the delegation to raise its concerns with the SEC and communicate the matter to the Director General of Police (DGP) for necessary steps based on the prevailing situation.

“If the State Election Commission is in favour of deploying central forces during the polls, steps will be taken,” he said.

The chief minister said the security arrangements for local body elections fell within the SEC’s purview and asked the Left leaders to place their apprehensions before the appropriate authorities.

Referring to the elections to the TTAADC, Dr Saha said the situation had been tense at the time, prompting a demand for central armed forces. However, the state did not receive sufficient forces as elections were also being held in other places, including Assam and West Bengal, he said.

Dr Saha also claimed that CPM leaders had acknowledged that the village committee (VC) elections were conducted with comparatively better security arrangements.

Describing his meeting with the Left delegation as a frank discussion, the chief minister reiterated that the SEC would have to take a decision on the security arrangements for the local body polls.

In a separate political attack, the Chief Minister accused the opposition INDIA bloc of struggling for survival and criticised its association with the “cockroach party”.

He alleged that in order to wrest power, the opposition parties had been colluding with anti-national forces. “This party (Cockroach Party) fulfills all criterions that define an anti-national force and now the opposition just with the motive to usurp power, trying to back them and openly rubbing shoulders with them,” he alleged.

Dr Saha also referred to political developments in Nepal and Bangladesh and alleged that similar attempts were being made in some European countries.

“Mark my words, this sinister plan shall not be successful in India,” he said.
