The Gauhati High Court has directed Assam University Vice-Chancellor Rajive Mohan Pant to vacate his post over alleged violations of UGC appointment regulations. The university has informed authorities in New Delhi and is awaiting the Centre’s response.

The Gauhati High Court has directed Assam University Vice-Chancellor Rajive Mohan Pant to vacate his position over alleged violations of University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations governing his appointment, raising questions about the selection process for the top administrative post at the central university.

According to an official, the High Court issued the direction on October 14, asking Pant to step down as Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar. The appointment has reportedly been challenged on the grounds that the prescribed eligibility criteria and procedures under UGC regulations were not followed.

The development has drawn attention to the regulatory framework governing appointments to senior academic and administrative positions in India’s higher education institutions. As a central university, Assam University operates within the framework of applicable central laws and higher education regulations.

The controversy has also brought the role of the Union Education Ministry under scrutiny, as the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor at a central university involves compliance with the relevant statutory provisions and prescribed appointment procedures.

University Registrar Pradosh Kiran Nath said the matter had been communicated to the authorities in New Delhi. According to him, the university is awaiting a response from the Centre before deciding on its subsequent course of action.

The High Court has also raised the question of recovering the salary already paid to Pant in connection with the controversy. However, the precise legal implications of the direction, including any potential recovery of salary, will depend on the court’s order, applicable legal provisions and further proceedings in the matter.

The university’s next steps are expected to depend on official communications from the concerned central authorities and the interpretation of the court’s directions. The situation has created uncertainty regarding the university’s top leadership while the relevant authorities consider the matter.

Assam University, headquartered in Silchar in southern Assam, is a central university serving students from Assam and other parts of the Northeast. The institution plays an important role in higher education, research and academic development in the region.

Any change in the Vice-Chancellor’s position could have administrative implications for the university, including its ongoing academic activities and institutional decision-making. However, the impact will depend on how the university and the concerned authorities implement the court’s direction.

The case also highlights the importance of ensuring transparency and compliance with UGC regulations in appointments to senior positions in universities. Such regulations establish eligibility requirements and procedures intended to uphold academic standards and institutional accountability.

Further clarity is expected after the university receives an official response from the central authorities and the legal position surrounding the appointment becomes clearer.

The university’s administration has yet to announce its subsequent course of action publicly in the information available about the matter. The final implications for Pant’s tenure and any question of salary recovery remain subject to the court’s order and further legal or administrative developments.
