INDIA bloc leaders, led by Rahul Gandhi, vowed to intensify their campaign against the Election Commission and BJP government over alleged electoral irregularities, Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls and “vote theft,” pledging to defend the Constitution and restore democracy.

Leaders of the Opposition INDIA bloc on Tuesday pledged to continue their united campaign against the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the BJP-led central government over alleged electoral irregularities, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and claims of “vote theft”.

The announcement came after Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi hosted a high-tea meeting at his residence at 5, Sunehri Bagh Road, New Delhi. The meeting brought together INDIA bloc leaders, student activists and civil society representatives following a protest march in the national capital on Monday.

Addressing a joint press conference after the meeting, opposition leaders said they would continue their collective efforts to protect democratic institutions, safeguard constitutional values and seek accountability over the electoral process. Rahul Gandhi described the campaign as a movement to restore democracy and asserted that the opposition alliance would continue its protests.

The meeting followed the INDIA bloc’s “March for Democracy” in Delhi on Monday, during which opposition leaders and supporters raised concerns over the Election Commission’s handling of the voter-list revision exercise. The opposition has also approached the Supreme Court over its allegations concerning the electoral process. <Cite refs={[“turn912199news21″,”turn912199search7”]}/>

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge praised the turnout at Monday’s protest, saying the participation demonstrated that opposition leaders had taken public concerns seriously.

“Rarely have people taken to the streets in such large numbers,” Kharge said, referring to the gathering in Delhi. He maintained that the INDIA bloc would remain united in raising issues related to democracy and electoral transparency.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav also emphasised the alliance’s commitment to protecting democratic institutions. He said the opposition parties were prepared to make necessary sacrifices to defend democracy.

Yadav criticised the decision to restrict access to Jantar Mantar, a traditional venue for demonstrations, arguing that the move reflected the difficulties faced by protesters. He also warned that those accused by the opposition of undermining constitutional institutions would not escape accountability.

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule said the INDIA bloc stood firmly together, expressing concern over what she described as threats to the Constitution. She said the opposition’s campaign would continue as part of its efforts to defend constitutional principles.

Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose sharply criticised the Election Commission under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She alleged that the poll body was undermining free and fair elections and argued that concerns over the electoral process required urgent attention.

Rahul Gandhi reiterated the opposition’s central message during his remarks to the media, alleging that democratic institutions and the constitutional framework were under threat under the present government.

“Democracy has been destroyed in this country. The election system has been destroyed,” Gandhi said, asserting that the INDIA bloc was working together to restore democratic governance. These remarks reflected the opposition’s position on the dispute, rather than an established finding of electoral misconduct.

The controversy centres on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, an exercise intended by the Election Commission to update voter lists and identify duplicate or ineligible entries. Opposition parties have questioned aspects of the process, alleging irregularities and raising concerns about the possible exclusion of eligible voters.

The Election Commission, however, has maintained that the SIR exercise is intended to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls and includes safeguards to protect eligible voters. The BJP and the poll body have rejected allegations of political bias and electoral manipulation. <Cite refs={[“turn912199search8″,”turn912199news24”]}/>

The INDIA bloc’s latest meeting therefore marks another stage in the ongoing political confrontation over electoral transparency and the functioning of constitutional institutions. The opposition leaders have vowed to maintain coordination among their parties and continue raising their concerns through protests and legal channels.

By hosting the meeting a day after the street demonstration, Gandhi sought to bring opposition leaders, student groups and civil society representatives together around a common campaign. The joint press conference also provided an opportunity for leaders from different parties to publicly reaffirm their commitment to the alliance’s efforts.

The leaders concluded that their campaign would continue, with the stated objective of defending constitutional values and ensuring what they consider to be a transparent and fair electoral process in India.
