Tripura CM Manik Saha has directed officials to expedite the DPR for the proposed Jolaibari medical college in South Tripura under PMJVK, focusing on modern healthcare infrastructure, medical education, student facilities and regional development.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has directed officials to expedite the preparation and submission of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed medical college at Jolaibari in South Tripura district. The project is being planned under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK), with the state government focusing on modern healthcare infrastructure, improved medical education and better access to healthcare services in the southern part of the state.

A review meeting was held at the State Civil Secretariat to assess the progress, preparedness and implementation roadmap for the proposed institution. Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath also shared an update about a review meeting at the Secretariat, highlighting the government’s efforts to assess the project’s progress and preparedness.

During the meeting, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte presented a detailed visual report outlining the proposed medical college’s development plan, infrastructure requirements and the existing condition of Shantirbazar District Hospital. The presentation also covered various aspects related to the implementation of the project.

According to the plan discussed at the meeting, the proposed medical college is expected to utilise the existing District Hospital at Shantirbazar in South Tripura. Following a review of the presentation, Chief Minister Saha discussed different components of the proposal and issued directions to the officials concerned to ensure proper planning and timely preparation of the DPR.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, stressed that the proposed medical college should be developed with a long-term vision. He said the project should not be limited to establishing a medical college and hospital but should also contribute to the planned development of the Jolaibari area.

Saha emphasised the need to develop modern infrastructure and facilities that can support healthcare, education and the overall growth of the region. He said the proposed institution should provide an appropriate academic environment for students and ensure suitable working conditions for doctors, medical professionals and other staff members.

During the review, the Chief Minister suggested considering additional facilities, including a yoga centre, an auditorium, a football ground and an indoor badminton hall, as part of the proposed infrastructure. These amenities are intended to support students’ academic and extracurricular activities while contributing to a more comprehensive educational environment.

He further underlined the importance of scientifically planned, functional and modern infrastructure to meet the long-term requirements of medical education and healthcare delivery. According to the directions issued during the meeting, planning should give equal importance to academic standards, hospital facilities, the quality of medical services and the needs of patients visiting the institution.

The existing infrastructure and future requirements of Shantirbazar District Hospital are also expected to be assessed carefully to determine how the facility can support the proposed medical college. The Chief Minister stressed that adequate hospital infrastructure and essential patient-care facilities would be necessary for the institution to function effectively and provide quality healthcare services.

The proposed project is expected to improve access to medical education and healthcare infrastructure for people in South Tripura and neighbouring areas. If implemented, the institution could also contribute to the development of supporting facilities and services in the surrounding region.

Earlier, Minority Welfare Minister Shukla Charan Noatia said the state government had initiated planning for the medical college with proposed funding support under the Centre’s PMJVK scheme. The project falls within the 38-Jolaibari Assembly constituency, which Noatia represents.

The Department of Minorities Welfare has been identified as the nodal department responsible for overseeing the project’s implementation. Noatia also said a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Saha had discussed the project’s modalities, planning and implementation roadmap.

The meeting was attended by Minority Welfare Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, department director Nirmal Adhikari, the South Tripura district magistrate and collector, and senior officials from the Health Department, Public Works Department and other concerned departments.

The government has not yet disclosed the proposed medical college’s total cost, student intake capacity, number of seats or construction schedule. Details regarding the final approval status, funding allocation and implementation timeline also remain pending.

The immediate priority, as outlined during the review meeting, is to expedite the DPR and ensure coordinated planning among the departments concerned. The next stages of the project will depend on the preparation of the detailed proposal and subsequent decisions on funding, infrastructure development and implementation.
