Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury honoured nine ‘Rahveers’ or Good Samaritans for helping road accident victims reach hospitals quickly. Each awardee received Rs 25,000 and a certificate, recognising their courage, compassion and vital role in saving lives after road accidents.
Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Wednesday honoured citizens who demonstrated courage and humanity by helping road accident victims reach hospitals quickly, recognising their crucial role in providing timely assistance and potentially saving precious lives.
The award ceremony was organised by the Transport Department at Conference Hall No. 1 of the State Secretariat. The event recognised individuals honoured under the ‘Rahveer’ or Good Samaritan initiative, which seeks to encourage people to come forward and assist injured road accident victims without hesitation.
During the programme, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury presented each awardee with Rs 25,000 and a certificate as recognition of their humanitarian service. The initiative places emphasis on the importance of immediate assistance following road accidents, particularly when quick medical attention can prove critical for an injured person.
Among those honoured were Kajal Debnath and Prasenjit Bhowmik, who were jointly recognised, along with Ashesh Das, Khurshid Mia and Ajit Das from Gomati district. From Dhalai district, Satyajit Kumar Shil and Satya Ranjan Debnath received recognition, while Latika Sinha from Unakoti district was also honoured for her contribution.
According to the Transport Department, the awardees had stepped forward during emergency situations and helped accident victims receive medical attention by ensuring their prompt transportation to hospitals. Their actions were highlighted as examples of compassion, social responsibility and courage during moments when injured people require immediate support.
Addressing the gathering, Chowdhury stressed that the central message of the Rahveer initiative is straightforward: people should not hesitate to help accident victims. He called upon citizens to assist injured persons and help them reach the nearest hospital as quickly as possible.
The minister said that helping an accident victim is not merely a matter of duty but also represents an important expression of humanity. He praised the awardees for putting aside fear and hesitation and extending assistance when it was needed most.
The initiative also seeks to strengthen public participation in road accident response. While road safety measures include traffic regulation, enforcement and infrastructure improvements, immediate assistance from members of the public can also play an important role following a crash.
Chowdhury urged citizens to adopt the spirit of the Rahveer initiative and contribute to saving lives whenever they witness an accident. He emphasised that timely assistance can make a significant difference for people who are seriously injured and awaiting medical care.
The recognition of the nine awardees is intended to encourage similar acts of responsibility among citizens across Tripura. By publicly honouring Good Samaritans, the Transport Department aims to reinforce the message that assisting accident victims is an important part of collective road safety responsibility.
The minister extended his appreciation and congratulations to the awardees for their humanitarian actions. He also called on the public to respond to road accidents with compassion rather than hesitation.
