BJP and CPI(M) leaders visited injured Tipra Motha workers hospitalized after firing erupted during Tripura’s TTAADC village committee polls. While BJP called the violence a deep conspiracy, the opposition alleged armed outsiders disrupted voting, sparking clashes.
High-ranking leaders from both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) visited injured Tipra Motha workers hospitalized across Tripura on Tuesday. The hospital visits followed a violent firing episode during Monday’s village committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), laying bare deep political fault lines and sharply divergent narratives surrounding election security.
BJP Tripura Pradesh president and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Abhishek Debroy arrived at Govind Ballabh Pant (GB) Hospital in Agartala on Tuesday morning to inspect the condition of the injured workers.
Speaking directly with treating physicians, victims, and their distressed families, Debroy sought firsthand updates on their medical status. Addressing reporters outside the facility, Debroy termed the armed assault “extremely unfortunate” and confirmed he had formally asked the state police apparatus to carry out a comprehensive probe into the shooting.
Debroy reiterated that the ruling party had circulated unambiguous instructions across all administrative units to ensure polling proceeded without disturbance. He contended that voting across the vast majority of polling booths had stayed calm and orderly.
“Who came suddenly and carried out such an incident is a matter for investigation,” Debroy stated, suggesting that the sudden escalation pointed toward a pre-planned provocation. “It looks like a deep conspiracy, and the unvarnished facts will certainly emerge once law enforcement finishes the investigation.”
Reflecting personal anguish, Debroy noted that one of the severely wounded youths hailed from his home assembly constituency.
“The boy is very good. He is from my Assembly constituency. I am deeply saddened and sorry,” Debroy said, recounting that he spent a sleepless night following news of the bloodshed. He pledged continuous personal and administrative backing to the affected families, assuring them that, in his official capacity as an elected representative, he would guarantee comprehensive assistance and medical support.
Simultaneously, Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury traveled to Gomati District Hospital to check on an injured Tipra Motha candidate alongside wounded supporters.
Unlike the ruling party’s framing of an unexplained conspiracy, Chaudhury placed responsibility squarely on organized political disruption. He alleged that an organized convoy of 10 to 12 vehicles packed with non-resident outsiders reached the Surma Centre with the deliberate aim of rigging and influencing the election process.
Chaudhury stated that violent altercations flared up as soon as local electors stood their ground, culminating in gunfire that left a contesting candidate shot and several others seriously wounded.
Chaudhury cited multiple viral video recordings shared across social media platforms, alleging that the footage captured partisan operatives trying to enter polling precincts to cast fraudulent ballots.

Demanding an impartial judicial or high-level administrative investigation, he also highlighted a chaotic post-poll altercation near the electronic strong room, where rival partisan groups attempted to track ballot box transit, resulting in physical assaults on on-duty police officers. Despite the breakdown, Chaudhury commended ordinary citizens, observing that high turnout demonstrated a resilience that defied intimidation.

The flare-up has cast a sharp spotlight on security oversight during the crucial TTAADC village committee polls, held after a ten-year hiatus. With fierce multi-cornered battles involving the BJP, CPI(M), Congress, Tipra Motha, and CPI(ML), the visits by competing political heavyweights illustrate an intensifying struggle over accountability—one side alleging an elusive external plot, the other charging systemic electoral subversion.
