West Tripura MP and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb will visit New York from October 5 to 9 as part of India’s parliamentary delegation to the 81st UN General Assembly, focusing on global development, AI, climate change, terrorism and peace.
West Tripura Lok Sabha MP and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb is set to visit New York as a member of India’s Parliamentary Delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). His visit is scheduled from October 5 to 9.
During his stay in New York, Deb will participate in engagements associated with the UNGA and India’s parliamentary representation at the global forum. The visit comes as the 81st UNGA is expected to address a wide range of international issues, including sustainable development, climate change, development financing, counter-terrorism, artificial intelligence, maritime security, peacekeeping and reform of the United Nations.
India has outlined several priorities for the 81st UNGA, with particular emphasis on the developmental interests and concerns of countries in the Global South. According to the 81st UNGA Priorities Paper released by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, India has reiterated its commitment to active participation in the UN system and to advancing issues that are important to developing nations.
Against this backdrop, Deb’s inclusion in the Indian Parliamentary Delegation places his visit within the broader framework of India’s parliamentary diplomacy and international engagement. Parliamentary delegations play a role in facilitating exchanges of views and strengthening dialogue on matters of common global interest.
During the visit, discussions and interactions are expected to remain connected to several key areas of India’s international priorities. These include sustainable development, climate action, development financing, the interests of the Global South, emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, counter-terrorism and international peace and security.
The growing importance of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies is also expected to feature prominently in discussions surrounding the UNGA. At the same time, issues related to climate change, sustainable development and financing for development remain significant concerns for developing countries.
India has also continued to highlight the importance of international cooperation in addressing terrorism and maintaining global peace and security. Maritime security and UN peacekeeping are among other areas linked to India’s broader engagement at the United Nations.
Deb’s office said the visit is expected to provide opportunities for interaction and exchange of views on issues of global importance while presenting India’s perspective on key international matters. His participation will also form part of India’s wider parliamentary outreach during the UNGA session.
