The Reserve Bank of India has extended an existing KYC facility available to Non-Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin to Foreign Portfolio Investors, allowing banks to accept original certified copies of KYC documents certified by specified authorities abroad.
Under the amended directions, banks may accept an original certified copy of Aadhaar-related proof or an officially valid document for FPIs, with the certification done by specified authorities. The certified copies may be attested by authorised officials of overseas branches of Scheduled Commercial Banks registered in India, branches of overseas banks having relationships with Indian banks, Notary Public abroad, Court Magistrate, Judge, or the Indian Embassy/Consulate General in the country where the non-resident customer resides.
The amendment was issued on Friday through the RBI (Commercial Banks – Know Your Customer) Amendment Directions, 2026 and came into effect immediately.
