Tripura University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Debabrata Das said NCC training builds discipline, leadership, civic awareness and responsible citizenship among students, while urging educational institutions to encourage greater participation in NCC activities for students’ overall development.
Tripura University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Debabrata Das has highlighted the growing importance of National Cadet Corps (NCC) training in developing disciplined, responsible and socially aware young citizens with leadership qualities.
Prof. Das made the remarks while attending the valedictory ceremony of a 15-day NCC camp held at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel in Agartala. He attended the concluding programme as the Chief Guest and interacted with reporters on the sidelines of the event on Sunday.
Speaking about the changing attitude of students towards NCC, Prof. Das said that an increasing number of young people are joining NCC activities out of their own interest. According to him, students are increasingly recognising the value of NCC training in their overall development and in preparing them to become responsible members of society.
“The NCC shows students the path to becoming good citizens. Students have now realised its importance. Its reflection can also be seen in their marksheets. Today, students are joining NCC training out of their own interest,” Das said.
He stressed that participation in NCC programmes is increasingly being driven by genuine enthusiasm rather than compulsion. He also underlined the role of educational institutions in creating greater opportunities for students to participate in NCC training and related activities.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, universities and colleges have an important role in supporting programmes that complement formal classroom education. NCC activities, he noted, provide students with opportunities to develop qualities such as discipline, teamwork, leadership and civic responsibility.
The valedictory ceremony was attended by Major General Anurag Vij, Additional Director General of NCC and Director of the NCC Directorate, North Eastern Region. Lieutenant Colonel Rohan Gupta, Commanding Officer of the 15th Battalion, NCC, was also present at the programme. Prof. Das was felicitated during the ceremony.
The 15-day NCC camp provided participating cadets with intensive exposure to various aspects of discipline, teamwork, leadership and service-oriented activities. The training session aimed to reinforce the NCC’s broader objective of character building and responsible citizenship among young people.
Senior NCC officials, officers and cadets participated in the concluding programme, marking the completion of the training camp in Agartala.
Prof. Das further emphasised that the growing participation of students in NCC activities demonstrates their recognition of the importance of such programmes alongside academic education. He urged universities and colleges to continue encouraging NCC initiatives so that more students can benefit from structured training and opportunities for personal development.

The Vice-Chancellor said that such initiatives can help prepare young people to make a positive contribution to society while strengthening discipline, leadership and civic awareness among students.
