In Ladakh, RNU Akashvani Kargil has launched a special podcast series under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, with the first programme focusing on “Natural Farming – Towards Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Agriculture.”
The programme featured Dr. Nazir Hussain, Scientist, Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kargil, in conversation with Anayat Ali of RNU Akashvani Kargil.
During the podcast, Dr. Nazir Hussain explained the principles of natural farming and highlighted its role in improving soil health, reducing dependence on external chemical inputs and promoting sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.
He discussed various aspects of the National Mission on Natural Farming, including chemical-free cultivation, livestock integration, diversified cropping, use of locally available bio-inputs and integration of traditional agricultural knowledge with scientific practices.
Dr. Hussain said natural farming has considerable potential in Ladakh and Kargil, where agriculture is characterised by a short growing season, cold climatic conditions and limited water availability. He stressed the need for locally adapted practices, scientific research, farmer training and awareness for its successful adoption in the region.
Comparing natural farming with organic farming, Dr. Hussain said natural farming can be more effective and efficient in boosting production while reducing farmers’ dependence on externally purchased inputs.
The discussion also covered crop productivity, input costs, farmers’ income, water management, climate resilience and the need to make the transition towards natural farming economically viable for farmers.
The special podcast series, produced by RNU Akashvani Kargil under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, will be broadcast daily at 4:30 PM from Akashvani Kargil. The programmes will also be available on the AIRNews Kargil YouTube channel.
