Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport handled nearly 1.5 million passengers in 2025-26 and ranked sixth nationally in customer satisfaction, with modern passenger facilities, accessibility measures and upcoming cleanliness and service campaigns.
Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala handled nearly 1.5 million passengers during the 2025-26 financial year and secured the sixth position among airports across India in the Customer Satisfaction Survey (CSS), officials said on Wednesday.
MBB Airport Director Krishan Mohan Nehra said the airport has continued to strengthen passenger facilities with a focus on comfort, convenience, accessibility and service quality. According to officials, MBB Airport is the second busiest airport in the Northeast after Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati.
Nehra said the airport has introduced and commissioned several modern facilities to provide passengers with a comfortable, safe and hassle-free journey. The passenger-focused measures cover areas ranging from digital entry and check-in services to accessibility, information systems, connectivity and boarding facilities.
At the departure terminal, passengers can use Digi Yatra for faster entry, while check-in counters and baggage trolleys are available to support smoother processing. Other facilities include “May I Help You” assistance, seating arrangements, free Wi-Fi, mobile charging points and Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS).
The airport also houses passenger-oriented facilities such as the Udan Yatri Cafe, AVSAR outlets, Flybrary and a Kidz Zone. These facilities are aimed at improving the overall airport experience while providing passengers with access to essential services and amenities.
Officials said MBB Airport has also placed emphasis on making its facilities accessible and inclusive for passengers with disabilities. Wheelchairs, dedicated accessible toilets and tactile flooring are among the facilities available at the airport.
Staff members working under the “May I Help You” service and airline personnel have also received training in Indian Sign Language to assist passengers with hearing and speech disabilities. A telephone facility in the departure area allows passengers to request wheelchair assistance when required.
The airport has simultaneously focused on safe and reliable flight operations. Nehra said MBB Airport is equipped with a Category-I Instrument Landing System (ILS), Approach Lighting System and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI). These systems assist aircraft during approach and landing, particularly when visibility is reduced.
Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) have also been implemented to support safe and coordinated airport operations during periods of poor visibility. The measures are part of the airport’s operational preparedness to maintain safety and reliability under varying weather conditions.
Passenger movement between the terminal and aircraft has also been facilitated through aerobridges at contact bays. According to the airport authorities, passengers can board and disembark directly between the terminal and aircraft through these facilities. Rear-door boarding and deboarding are also undertaken wherever operationally feasible to help reduce aircraft turnaround time.
MBB Airport also provides dedicated baby-care rooms and diaper-changing facilities in ladies’ washrooms, adding to its family-friendly passenger amenities.
The airport’s passenger traffic has expanded significantly over the past decade. Earlier in 2026, officials said passenger traffic had increased from around 8.9 lakh in 2014-15 to nearly 15 lakh in 2025-26, while aircraft movements also rose substantially during the same period.
The latest customer satisfaction ranking has further highlighted the airport’s passenger-service initiatives. Earlier CSS results in 2025 had also recorded strong passenger satisfaction at MBB Airport, when it ranked first in the Northeast and 15th nationally among 62 airports in one round of the survey.
Meanwhile, MBB Airport is preparing to observe two service-oriented campaigns in accordance with directions from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The Swachhta Hi Seva campaign will be conducted from September 17 to October 2, while the Yatri Sewa Abhiyan-2026 will continue from September 17 to October 10.
Officials said the campaigns will focus on Seva, Swachhata, Sahyog and “Service with Smile”, with emphasis on cleanliness, passenger convenience and improved service delivery. The initiatives will also cover accessibility for senior citizens and Divyangjan, passenger information, baggage services, drinking water, digital facilities and women- and child-friendly amenities.

The Swachhta Hi Seva campaign will begin on September 17, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. The Tripura government is also scheduled to launch a month-long campaign from the same date to mark the Prime Minister’s birthday and commemorate his 25 years in governance and public life.
With passenger traffic remaining around the 1.5-million mark and continued expansion of passenger amenities, MBB Airport officials said the focus would remain on maintaining service standards, improving convenience and ensuring safe and accessible air travel for passengers using Agartala airport.
