Tripura Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury accuses the government of suppressing media criticism, alleging action against digital and cable outlets, pressure on newspapers, and continued corruption across key departments.
A political controversy has emerged in Tripura after Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury accused the state government of attempting to suppress criticism from the media. Chaudhury raised concerns over alleged actions against YouTube channels, Facebook pages and cable networks that have reportedly faced suspension of broadcasts or disconnection of services.
Speaking on the issue, Chaudhury said questioning the government’s functioning and highlighting public grievances are essential components of a democratic system. He emphasised that citizens have the right to raise questions and that the media has a responsibility to bring issues affecting the public to the government’s attention.
Describing the media as the “fourth pillar of democracy,” the Opposition Leader stressed the importance of protecting its independence. According to Chaudhury, media organisations should be able to report public concerns without facing punitive measures for raising questions about the functioning of the administration.
Chaudhury alleged that media outlets that have highlighted problems such as deteriorating roads, irregular electricity supply and shortages of essential ration commodities, including rice, pulses and sugar, have faced pressure. He also referred to reports concerning repeated job notifications without corresponding recruitment and delays in issuing appointment letters following TET and TRBT examinations.
The Opposition Leader particularly pointed to cases in which cable channels were allegedly disconnected abruptly. He described such actions as a serious concern for freedom of expression and argued that media organisations must have the freedom to report issues that directly affect ordinary citizens.
Chaudhury also alleged that newspapers in the state are facing pressure through various means, including the withholding or denial of government advertisements. He maintained that the fundamental role of journalism is neither to praise the government nor to support the opposition, but to present facts and issues before the public in the public interest.
The Opposition Leader further expanded his criticism to the issue of corruption. He alleged that the state government’s stated policy of “zero tolerance” towards corruption has not prevented alleged irregularities from continuing in different departments. He specifically referred to the Public Works Department, Health Department and Police, claiming that alleged corruption affects different levels of administration, from senior officials to grassroots employees.
According to Chaudhury, such allegations raise broader questions about governance and administrative accountability in the state. He argued that transparency, independent journalism and public scrutiny are necessary for ensuring that government institutions remain accountable to citizens.
The remarks have added to an ongoing political debate in Tripura over media freedom, government accountability and the treatment of critical voices. The allegations made by Chaudhury represent the Opposition’s position, while the government’s response to the specific accusations would be necessary for a complete assessment of the claims.
