Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff believes George Russell can recover from his Spanish GP setback, urging the team to unlock his full potential as the Briton seeks to remain competitive in the drivers’ championship battle.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has backed George Russell to recover from his recent setback at the Spanish Grand Prix, insisting that the British driver has the ability and experience required to fight for major championships. Wolff said Mercedes must analyse Russell’s performance and find a way to “unlock” the potential that remains within both the driver and the car.
Russell finished fifth at the first-ever Madring race despite showing strong pace during parts of the event. The Mercedes driver had been running a two-stop strategy and appeared capable of challenging for a stronger result. However, his performance dropped after the tyre changes, preventing him from maintaining the pace needed to fight at the front.
The result proved particularly costly in the championship standings. Russell’s Mercedes teammate and title rival Kimi Antonelli won the race, extending the gap between the two drivers to 81 points. Following the Spanish Grand Prix, Russell admitted that he was no longer in contention for the drivers’ title.
Wolff, however, believes it is too early to write Russell off. According to the Mercedes boss, the pace Russell demonstrated late in the race showed that the necessary speed is still present.
“You can see the pace he had towards the end when he was catching Leclerc,” Wolff said, highlighting Russell’s strong closing pace. He added that Russell was the fastest driver on track at one stage but struggled to reproduce that performance after changing tyres.
Wolff acknowledged that Mercedes needs to understand why Russell’s pace disappeared following the tyre changes. He believes the performance is already available within the driver and the car, but the team needs to identify how to consistently bring it out.
The Mercedes Team Principal also strongly defended Russell’s credentials as a top-level driver. He pointed to Russell’s achievements in the junior categories, including winning Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles in his rookie seasons, as evidence of his ability.
Wolff stressed that Russell has previously demonstrated the qualities necessary to succeed at the highest level. He suggested that the current challenge is not a lack of talent but finding the right conditions for the driver to consistently perform at his maximum.
The psychological aspect could also play a role, according to Wolff. Russell has endured a difficult period in the championship and has seen his deficit to Antonelli grow considerably. Wolff said that even elite drivers can experience difficult races and seasons, but the strongest competitors are capable of recovering from setbacks.
With the championship battle still developing, Wolff believes Russell should not become overly focused on the points deficit. Formula 1 remains a mechanical sport, and unexpected incidents can dramatically change the standings.
A retirement or crash involving a championship leader could quickly reduce what currently appears to be a substantial advantage. Wolff therefore urged Russell and Mercedes to concentrate on delivering their best performance at every remaining race rather than becoming distracted by the points table.

For Mercedes, the priority will now be understanding Russell’s tyre-related difficulties and helping him regain consistency. Wolff remains convinced that the British driver possesses the speed and ability needed to challenge for championships if Mercedes can successfully unlock his potential.
