CPI(M) state secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has claimed that the BJP-Tipra Motha alliance is facing growing resistance at the grassroots level in the ADC areas of Sabroom, with differences reportedly emerging among workers over the alliance and seat-sharing arrangements.
Chaudhury made the remarks during his visit to Rupaichari ADC Village, where he interacted with CPI(M) candidates, supporters and local residents across villages under Rupaichari block. During the visit, he reviewed the party’s preparations for the upcoming ADC Village Council polls and assessed the campaign activities of its candidates.
According to Chaudhury, workers and supporters of both the BJP and Tipra Motha are unhappy with the decision of the two parties to contest the village council elections through an alliance. He claimed that differences relating to seat-sharing and the alliance arrangement have become increasingly visible at the village and local levels.
The CPI(M) leader further alleged that candidates of the BJP and Tipra Motha are contesting against one another in several wards, including areas under Rupaichari block. He presented this as an indication of differences within the alliance at the grassroots level ahead of the ADC Village Council elections.
Chaudhury also said that the response from people during his visit was “spontaneous”. He highlighted the participation of CPI(M) candidates, particularly women and young people, in preparations for the upcoming election campaign.
The Leader of the Opposition also spoke about the nomination process for the village council polls. He said scrutiny of nomination papers was completed on Wednesday and claimed that nearly 99 percent of nominations with valid documents had been accepted. Thursday was the final day for candidates to withdraw their nominations.
Chaudhury additionally alleged that opposition candidates were being threatened and pressured to withdraw from the electoral contest. He said the issue had been brought to the attention of the administration and claimed that the authorities had assured that such attempts at intimidation would not be permitted.
Calling for a free and democratic ADC Village Council election, Chaudhury said people in the ADC areas had observed the functioning of both the BJP and Tipra Motha over the past several years. He expressed confidence that what he described as pressure tactics would not succeed.
“The people will decide,” Chaudhury said, asserting that democracy would ultimately prevail in the village council elections.
The remarks come as political parties intensify preparations for the ensuing ADC Village Council polls in Tripura. With nominations scrutinised and the withdrawal process reaching its final stage, campaigning is expected to gain momentum across the ADC areas.
