Russell Sinha’s political journey from a prominent Communist family in Tripura to a rising BJP youth leader reflects a major ideological shift, grassroots activism, and dedication to public service, shaped by family history, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, and social media outreach.
Politics has been deeply rooted in Russell Sinha’s family history, but his own political journey has taken a distinctly different direction. Coming from a family with a strong Communist political legacy in Tripura, Sinha chose to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a karyakarta in November 2016 and gradually emerged as an active youth leader associated with the party’s organisational and communication activities.
Born on October 6, 1991, in Kamalpur of Dhalai district, Russell Sinha is the nephew of late Bimal Singha, a former Tripura Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Urban Development, who was assassinated in 1998. He is the son of late Govinda Das Singha, popularly known as Biman Singha, Bimal Singha’s elder brother and a school teacher.
Russell’s political lineage goes back another generation. His great-grandfather, late Gana Singha, was a member of Tripura’s first 30-member Territorial Council, formed in 1957. The family subsequently remained closely associated with Communist politics in the state. Russell’s decision to enter BJP politics therefore represented a significant departure from the political tradition that had influenced his family for generations.
Russell joined the BJP on November 22, 2016. According to him, he was particularly impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the policy decisions taken by the Union government, including demonetisation. His political decision was notable because his aunt, Bijoy Laxmi Sinha, the wife of late Bimal Singha, was at the time a sitting MLA of the Communist Party.
His transition into BJP politics was not without challenges. Russell has spoken about receiving death threats after becoming active in the party. The assassination of two of his uncles, he has said, left a lasting impact on the family and influenced his understanding of political violence and vendetta.
Russell began his BJP journey under the leadership of then Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) State President Tinku Roy. He also received guidance from late Advocate Arum Kanti Bhowmik and Dr Ashok Sinha. In 2017, he shifted from Kamalpur to Agartala to work as a full-time party worker, taking on responsibilities within the organisation at an early stage of his political career.
His initial assignments included working as Co-Coordinator of the BJP Media Cell under then Media In-charge Victor Shome. He was subsequently entrusted with social media and content-related responsibilities by then BJP State President Biplab Kumar Deb. Russell remained associated with these responsibilities until November 2018, gaining experience in political communication and digital outreach.
A significant episode in his early public life came in September 2017, when he took up the case of Gopal Das, a resident of Belonia who was stranded in Saudi Arabia and seeking assistance to return home. Russell highlighted the matter on social media and approached then Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj through Twitter, requesting government intervention.
The episode demonstrated how Russell sought to use digital platforms to highlight individual citizens’ problems and connect them with government authorities. It also added a public-service dimension to his growing political profile.
