Clashes between TISF and ABVP at Kailashahar College disrupted campus activities, with rival student groups confronting each other and Principal Dr. Ajit Barman reportedly locked inside his office amid heavy police, TSR and central force deployment.
A routine deputation submission at Kailashahar College turned into a tense confrontation on Wednesday after activists of two rival student organisations clashed on the campus, disrupting normal activities and leaving the college principal confined inside his office for several hours.
The incident began around noon when a delegation of the Tripura Indigenous Students’ Federation (TISF), backed by Tipra Motha, arrived at the college to submit a deputation to Principal Dr. Ajit Barman. According to TISF district president Anukul Debbarma, the delegation had obtained prior permission from the police and administration for the programme.
However, tension reportedly escalated when activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) allegedly obstructed the TISF delegation from entering the college. Debbarma claimed that ABVP activists locked the college gates and staged protests, raising slogans including “Tipra Motha Go Back.”
As the situation deteriorated, police personnel, Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and central security forces were deployed at the college to prevent the confrontation from escalating further. For nearly 90 minutes, members of the TISF delegation remained outside the gates.
Security forces subsequently intervened and cordoned off the TISF representatives before facilitating their movement to the principal’s office. The delegation eventually submitted its deputation to Dr. Barman and was later escorted out of the campus under police protection.
Following the incident, Debbarma expressed strong resentment against the police and college authorities. He alleged that TISF members were deliberately prevented from entering the premises and subjected to verbal abuse during the confrontation.
The situation took another turn after the TISF delegation left the campus. According to reports, ABVP activists entered the principal’s office, gheraoed Dr. Barman and locked him inside.
ABVP district convenor Ankan Pal put forward a different account of the confrontation. He alleged that NSUI and SFI workers, posing as supporters of Tipra Motha, misbehaved with female ABVP students and physically pushed them during the incident.
Pal further alleged that the principal’s decision to accept the TISF deputation had contributed to the situation. He demanded that action be taken against those allegedly responsible and said the principal would remain confined until the dignity of the affected students was restored.
By around 5 pm, Dr. Barman was reportedly still inside his office, while a heavy deployment of police, TSR personnel and central forces remained on the college campus. Security personnel were stationed in and around the premises to prevent further clashes between the rival student groups.

The incident has raised concerns over campus security and student-group confrontations at the college. Authorities continued to monitor the situation closely as tensions remained high following the day-long confrontation.
