Tripura Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul will represent the state at the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference in Cape Town, highlighting Tripura’s parliamentary traditions, democratic governance and legislative achievements on the international stage.
Tripura is set to gain international recognition in the parliamentary arena as Deputy Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Ram Prasad Paul, has been selected to represent the state at the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
Paul’s participation is being viewed as a significant achievement for Tripura, providing the state with an opportunity to showcase its parliamentary traditions, democratic practices and legislative journey before representatives from across the Commonwealth.
The selection was announced following an All India Presiding Officers’ CPA Meeting held on Tuesday at the Parliament House Annexe in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and attended by Speakers, Deputy Speakers and presiding officers from Parliament and state legislatures, along with senior officials from the central and state governments.
The meeting, which continued from 2 pm to 6 pm, discussed preparations for the upcoming conference in Cape Town. Key issues included the composition of India’s delegation, the conference programme and arrangements for the proposed study tour.
India is expected to send a 125-member delegation comprising representatives from Parliament and various state legislative assemblies. Tripura’s Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul will be part of the delegation and will attend the conference accompanied by his wife.
His inclusion is being regarded as an important recognition of Tripura’s contribution to India’s parliamentary system and democratic institutions. The conference will provide an international platform for Indian representatives to exchange views and experiences with parliamentarians from other Commonwealth countries.
The 69th CPA Conference is scheduled to begin on September 11 in Cape Town. The gathering will focus on parliamentary practices, democratic governance, legislative innovations and ways to strengthen representative institutions across Commonwealth nations.
Alongside the main conference, members of the Indian delegation are expected to participate in a study tour. The programme will offer exposure to international parliamentary institutions, legislative procedures and governance practices. The delegation is scheduled to return to India on October 2.
For Tripura, Paul’s participation is expected to be an opportunity to highlight the state’s experience in strengthening democratic institutions and encouraging grassroots-level participation in governance.

The Deputy Speaker’s presence at the international conference is also expected to bring greater visibility to Tripura’s legislative achievements and democratic engagement.
