Surrendered extremists in Tripura threaten hunger strikes, road and rail blockades from August 28 over unfulfilled rehabilitation demands, warning of intensified protests if authorities fail to provide a concrete solution.

Mounting frustration over what they described as unfulfilled government assurances has pushed surrendered extremists in Tripura to announce a fresh phase of agitation, including hunger strikes and road and railway blockades, if their demands are not addressed by August 28.

The protest leaders said around 40 to 50 surrendered extremists had already gathered to press the authorities for a concrete resolution to their long-pending demands. They stressed that the proposed agitation was being organised independently and was not being carried out under the banner or direction of any political party.

Addressing the media, one of the protest leaders said the group would begin a hunger strike at Sadhupara Bridge if the authorities failed to take decisive action by the August 28 deadline. The protesters also warned of blocking vehicles on the highway and staging hunger strikes near railway tracks at Jirania and Birgodas.

The group said the agitation would continue despite any reduction in participation, maintaining that their demands were linked to commitments made to surrendered extremists during the rehabilitation process.

“This is not about personal gain. It is about securing what is rightfully ours,” a protest representative said while explaining the reason behind the proposed movement.

The protesters expressed particular dissatisfaction over what they described as repeated verbal assurances from government officials. According to them, several commitments had been made in the past, including an assurance that the matter would be resolved within 72 hours. However, they claimed that nearly two months had passed without any concrete decision being implemented.

One of the protesters also alleged that he had been invited to attend a meeting on August 21 in connection with the issue, but no officials were present to hold discussions with them. The allegation has further fuelled resentment among the group, which is now demanding a clear decision rather than additional assurances.

Another meeting is expected to take place on August 28, and the protesters have made it clear that the outcome will determine their next course of action. They warned that failure to receive a satisfactory decision could lead to the launch of the proposed hunger strike and road and rail blockades.

The surrendered extremists urged the authorities to move beyond verbal commitments and take tangible steps towards resolving their rehabilitation and resettlement-related grievances. They maintained that repeated delays had increased frustration among members of the group and left them with little confidence in assurances made during previous interactions.

The proposed agitation could create disruptions on important road and railway routes in Tripura if the warnings are carried out. The protesters, however, said their primary objective was to draw the authorities’ attention to their pending demands and secure a formal resolution.

With August 28 emerging as the crucial deadline, attention is now focused on whether the authorities will hold meaningful discussions with the protesters and address their grievances before the proposed agitation begins. The group has warned that failure to break the stalemate could result in an escalation of its movement across the state.
