India’s urban unemployment rate (UR) for persons aged 15 years and above rose marginally to 6.7 per cent during the April to June quarter of current fiscal year, from 6.6 per cent in the previous quarter. According to Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) periodic labour force survey quarterly bulletin, unemployment rate in rural areas increased to 4.8 per cent from 4.3 per cent during the fourth quarter of last fiscal year. Meanwhile, the female urban UR decreased to 8.7 per cent in the current quarter from 9.1 per cent in the last quarter.
The data showed that sectoral distribution of employment continued to exhibit similar structural pattern, with the rural workforce predominantly engaged in the primary sector and the urban workforce concentrated in the tertiary sector. The share of regular wage or salaried employees among persons aged 15 years and above increased from 15.5 per cent to 16.1 per cent in rural areas and from 48.9 per cent to 49.3 per cent in urban areas on a sequential basis.
The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) among persons of age 15 years and above stood at 54.6 per cent in the first quarter, compared to 55.5 per cent in the previous quarter. In rural areas, LFPR stood at 56.9 per cent, down from 58.2 per cent in fourth quarter of last fiscal. Urban LFPR for the same age group remained unchanged at 50.2 per cent.
