Timely RBSK intervention helped six-year-old Khasrang Tripura of Sepahijala recover from congenital heart disease through free referral, advanced surgery in Chennai, and post-treatment care, highlighting Tripura’s efforts to provide accessible healthcare to children from economically disadvantaged families.
A timely medical intervention by a team under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) has helped a six-year-old girl from Tripura’s Sepahijala district recover from congenital heart disease and return to her normal life.
The child, Khasrang Tripura, daughter of Binod Tripura and Priyanka Tripura, is a resident of Pushkarbari under the Bishramganj Primary Health Centre area. She was brought to an RBSK health camp after experiencing severe breathing difficulties and chest pain.
During the health screening, attending physician Dr Jilam Das identified symptoms that indicated a possible congenital heart condition. Recognising the seriousness of the child’s condition, the medical team referred her to IGM Hospital in Agartala for further investigation.
An echocardiography examination conducted at the hospital confirmed that Khasrang was suffering from congenital heart disease (CHD). Following the diagnosis, advanced medical treatment and surgery were advised to address the condition.
However, Khasrang’s parents faced financial difficulties and were unable to bear the cost of treatment outside Tripura. The situation posed a major challenge for the family, as specialised treatment for congenital heart disease required advanced medical facilities.
Taking note of the family’s financial condition, the RBSK team stepped in and facilitated the child’s referral to Apollo Children’s Hospital in Chennai for advanced treatment. The intervention enabled Khasrang to access specialised cardiac care without her family having to shoulder the entire financial burden.
The child was admitted to the Chennai hospital on May 7. She subsequently underwent successful surgery for congenital heart disease on May 8. Following the procedure and recovery under medical supervision, she was discharged from the hospital on May 14.
The RBSK team continued to monitor her condition even after she returned home. On May 20, members of the RBSK team from Bishramganj Primary Health Centre visited Khasrang’s residence to assess her post-treatment health.
During the follow-up visit, the team found that the child had recovered completely and had resumed her normal routine. No physical complications were reported, marking a successful outcome following the timely diagnosis, referral, surgery and post-treatment monitoring.
The case highlights the importance of early screening and timely medical intervention for children suffering from serious health conditions. The RBSK is one of the key health initiatives designed to provide children, particularly those from economically disadvantaged families, with access to free health screening, diagnostic services and treatment.

The programme is being implemented across Tripura with the objective of taking healthcare services to the grassroots level and ensuring that children receive appropriate medical attention at an early stage.
Khasrang’s recovery also underscores the role of coordinated healthcare support, from identifying symptoms at a local health camp to arranging specialised treatment outside the state. Her family expressed gratitude to the RBSK team and the Tripura government for ensuring that their daughter received timely and life-saving treatment.
