Tripura’s GBP Hospital will install central AC across the entire medical block under Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s initiative, while the Central Laboratory will be relocated for patient convenience. Authorities expect both infrastructure upgrades to improve healthcare services and hospital facilities.
In a major step towards strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Tripura, the state government has initiated the installation of a centralized air-conditioning system across the entire medical block of Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital. The initiative has been taken under the direction of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha with the objective of improving patient care, hospital facilities, and the overall treatment environment.
Alongside the air-conditioning project, the hospital administration has also decided to relocate the Central Laboratory to the old labour room within the hospital complex. The move is aimed at making diagnostic services more accessible and convenient for patients and their attendants.
Addressing media queries regarding reports of patients receiving treatment on the floor in certain wards and the shortage of electric fans in the medical unit, Medical Superintendent of GBP Hospital, Dr. Bidhan Goswami, said that the Public Works Department (PWD) has already been entrusted with the responsibility of installing the central air-conditioning system.
He explained that construction and renovation work is currently underway in different sections of the medical block. Due to ongoing work, some areas cannot accommodate patients as safety measures are being strictly followed.
Dr. Goswami stated that the progress of the project has been relatively slow but assured that the authorities are closely monitoring the work. A recent review meeting was held with officials of the Public Works Department, during which they assured the hospital administration that the ongoing installation work would be completed within the next three months.
According to him, once the central AC system becomes fully operational, many of the existing challenges related to patient comfort, ventilation, and overcrowding will be addressed significantly. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to create a more comfortable environment for both patients and healthcare professionals, especially during periods of high temperatures.
Meanwhile, Principal of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Majumder, highlighted another important development aimed at improving public convenience. He said that many attendants accompanying patients currently face difficulties in reaching the Central Laboratory because of its existing location within the hospital premises.
To resolve this issue, the hospital administration has decided to shift the entire Central Laboratory to the old labour room, which is considered more accessible for the public. The relocation is expected to reduce unnecessary movement across the hospital campus and enable faster access to diagnostic services.
Dr. Majumder informed that the relocation process had been delayed due to certain financial constraints faced by the Public Works Department. However, the necessary financial sanction has now been approved, allowing the project to move forward without further obstacles.
He expressed confidence that the laboratory shifting work would be completed within the current month. Once operational at the new location, the facility is expected to offer greater convenience to patients, attendants, and hospital staff while enhancing the efficiency of diagnostic services.

The twin initiatives—installation of central air-conditioning throughout the medical block and relocation of the Central Laboratory—reflect the Tripura government’s continued emphasis on upgrading healthcare infrastructure. Hospital authorities believe these improvements will contribute to better patient care, smoother hospital operations, and a more efficient healthcare delivery system at GBP Hospital, one of the state’s premier medical institutions.
