Tea Board of India advances plans for the Agartala Tea Auction Centre after a key Kolkata meeting, promising better tea prices, transparent trading, lower marketing costs, and stronger national visibility for Tripura tea, boosting growers, estates, and the North-East’s tea industry.
The Tea Board of India has taken a significant step towards establishing the long-awaited Agartala Tea Auction Centre, a move expected to transform Tripura’s tea industry by ensuring better prices for growers, transparent trading, and greater national recognition for the state’s tea. The initiative gained fresh momentum following a high-level preparatory meeting held at the Tea Board headquarters in Kolkata, where officials discussed the roadmap and operational framework for the proposed auction centre.
The meeting was attended by Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) Samir Ranjan Ghosh, Managing Director Rajesh Kumar Das, and senior officials of the Tea Board of India led by Deputy Chairman C. Murugan. Discussions focused on the essential preparations and operational mechanisms required before the Agartala Tea Auction Centre becomes functional.
During the meeting, Deputy Chairman C. Murugan felicitated TTDC Chairman Samir Ranjan Ghosh in recognition of his efforts in promoting the tea sector. Ghosh described the honour as a tribute not only to him but to thousands of tea growers, plantation workers, and stakeholders across Tripura and the North-East who have continuously contributed to the growth of the tea industry.
Speaking after the meeting, Ghosh said the proposed auction centre would mark the beginning of a new chapter for Tripura’s tea sector. He stated that a dedicated auction platform in Agartala would ensure transparent trading practices and fair price discovery, enabling tea growers and producers to receive more competitive returns for their products. According to him, the facility will also reduce transportation expenses and marketing costs, making the business more profitable for both large tea estates and small tea growers.
For decades, tea producers in Tripura have been demanding a dedicated auction centre within the state. Currently, tea produced in Tripura is transported to auction centres located outside the state, increasing logistics costs and creating delays in marketing. The absence of a local auction platform has also limited direct participation from buyers, affecting competitive bidding and reducing potential earnings for producers.
Industry experts believe that the establishment of the Agartala Tea Auction Centre will significantly improve market access by attracting buyers from across India. The centre is expected to strengthen the tea value chain by increasing transparency, improving price discovery, and enhancing confidence among investors and tea entrepreneurs. The move is also likely to encourage greater investment in tea processing, packaging, and branding within the state.
Tripura has steadily emerged as one of India’s important tea-producing states. Currently ranked fifth in the country, the state produces nearly nine million kilograms of tea annually. The tea industry in Tripura has a unique historical legacy dating back to 1916, when it was established under the patronage of Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya. Unlike many tea-growing regions developed by British planters, Tripura’s tea industry is recognised as one of the few built through Indian initiative.
The state’s tea is widely known for its premium-quality CTC black tea. In recent years, producers have also diversified into orthodox, green, and white tea varieties, earning appreciation in both domestic and international markets. With increasing focus on quality production and sustainable cultivation, Tripura’s tea industry has continued to expand its presence beyond regional markets.

The successful outcome of the Kolkata meeting has generated optimism among tea growers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers.
