Tripura launches Smart OPD service to provide real-time teleconsultation with specialist doctors through digital healthcare technology. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurated the initiative in Khowai, aiming to deliver affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare to rural communities under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
The Tripura government has taken a significant step towards strengthening healthcare delivery by launching the Smart OPD service, a technology-driven initiative designed to make specialist medical consultations more accessible, affordable, and efficient for people living in rural and remote areas. The initiative was officially launched by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha during his visit to Khowai district on July 30, marking a major milestone in the state’s digital healthcare transformation.
According to official sources, the M-Star Smart OPD service will enable patients visiting their nearest Ayushman Arogya Mandir or Primary Health Centre (PHC) to receive real-time teleconsultations with specialist doctors stationed at district hospitals. The innovative system eliminates the need for patients to travel long distances to seek expert medical advice, ensuring quicker access to quality healthcare.
The Smart OPD service is equipped with advanced digital healthcare tools, including digital stethoscopes, examination cameras, and other diagnostic devices. These technologies allow specialist doctors to remotely examine patients, assess medical conditions, and recommend treatment while interacting with healthcare workers at local health centres.
Officials said the initiative will be introduced in phases across every district of Tripura in line with the objectives of the National Health Policy. The rollout has begun in Khowai district, where the district administration has procured eight Smart OPD kits for selected healthcare facilities.
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha distributed Smart OPD kits to Hemanta Debbarma Primary Health Centre (Behalabari), Champahaur Primary Health Centre, and Baijalbari Primary Health Centre. He described the project as a landmark initiative that combines modern technology with healthcare delivery to ensure that specialist medical services reach people at their doorsteps.
The project is being implemented with technical support from HLL Lifecare Limited, functioning under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, along with Hitachi MGRM Net. Their collaboration aims to strengthen digital health infrastructure and improve healthcare accessibility throughout the state.
A key feature of the Smart OPD platform is its integration with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). This integration enables the secure storage and seamless sharing of patients’ digital health records, prescriptions, diagnostic reports, and treatment history among healthcare institutions whenever required. The digital record system is expected to improve continuity of care and reduce duplication of medical tests.
Health Department officials believe the Smart OPD service will significantly reduce the burden on outpatient departments (OPDs) in district hospitals by allowing many consultations to be conducted remotely. This will not only ease congestion at larger healthcare facilities but also enable specialists to attend to more patients efficiently.
The initiative is also expected to lower healthcare expenses for rural families by reducing travel costs and minimizing delays in receiving specialist consultations. Patients suffering from chronic illnesses, elderly citizens, and individuals living in remote villages are expected to benefit the most from the service.
