The 135th edition of the Durand Cup Football commenced with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai in Guwahati today. The Asia’s oldest football tournament is being jointly organized by the Indian Army and the Government of Assam.
The opening ceremony was followed by the inaugural match between North East United FC and Bodoland FC. The ceremony featured cultural performances highlighting Assam’s heritage, along with demonstrations by the Indian Armed Forces. These included a hot air balloon display, combat free fall demonstration, aeromodel display and helicopter flypasts.
The inauguration of the tournament in Guwahati reflects Assam’s continued role as a host of major sporting events and highlights the collaboration between the Indian Army and the Government of Assam in promoting football and youth engagement through sports.
