India will have multiple medal opportunities at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow today, with boxing taking centre stage as a record 10 Indian pugilists, led by Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, compete in their respective finals. All 10 Indian boxers secured victories in the semi-finals yesterday, guaranteeing at least silver medals and marking India’s best-ever boxing performance at the Commonwealth Games. They will now aim to convert their silver medals into gold at the SEC Centre.
Among women finalists are Lovlina Borgohain in 75kg, Sakshi Chaudhary in 51kg, Preeti Pawar in 54kg, Jaismine Lamboria in 57kg, Priya Ghanghas in 60kg and Arundhati Choudhary in 70kg. In Men’s section, Jadumani Singh Mandengbam will fight in 55kg, Sachin Siwach in 60kg, Ankush Panghal in 80kg and Narender Berwal will appear in 90 plus kg category.
India’s judokas will also be in action after Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh won the country’s first-ever Commonwealth Games judo gold medals yesterday. In women’s category, Unnati Sharma in 63kg and Inunganbi Takhellambam in 70kg and in men’s category, Karanjit Singh Maan in 90kg and Harsh Tokas in 81kg category will begin their campaigns.
In lawn bowls, the men’s pairs team of Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar will face England in a must-win sectional match, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals. India will also compete for medals in para athletics and track cycling.
