Indian discus thrower Seema Kaliramna won the Commonwealth Games 2026 bronze medal, while coach-husband Ravinder revealed the family’s emotional sacrifice of leaving their four-year-old son behind. Seema also highlighted financial struggles, employment challenges, and appealed for stronger support for Indian athletes.

Behind every medal lies a story of determination, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment. Indian discus thrower Seema Kaliramna’s bronze medal triumph at the Commonwealth Games 2026 is one such inspiring tale that extends far beyond the sporting arena. While the nation celebrated her historic achievement, her coach and husband Ravinder shared the emotional sacrifices the family made, including leaving behind their four-year-old son, Rudra, in India during one of the most important moments of Seema’s career.

Seema delivered an impressive performance at the Scotstoun Stadium, registering a best throw of 58.65 metres to secure the bronze medal. The achievement marked her first major international medal and added another memorable chapter to India’s athletics campaign at the Commonwealth Games.

However, the celebrations were accompanied by heartfelt emotions. Ravinder revealed that their young son could not travel to Glasgow because he did not have a passport, while Ravinder himself faced uncertainty over his visa until the final days before the competition.

Speaking after the event, Ravinder explained that his visa was approved only on the evening of July 28, forcing him to fly to Glasgow the following day. With little time available, it became impossible to arrange travel documents for Rudra.

“We missed our son a lot,” Ravinder said, adding that although their son remained in India, he watched his mother’s performance from home. He shared that when he called home after the competition, Rudra had already gone to sleep because he was not accustomed to staying awake late into the night.

The emotional aspect of the family’s journey was echoed by Seema herself. The 27-year-old athlete dedicated her bronze medal to her husband, acknowledging his constant guidance, encouragement, and coaching throughout her sporting journey, including her remarkable comeback after becoming a mother.

“My son is at home. I miss him a lot. Whenever I talk about my son, those emotions come out again and again. Now I will go home and meet him,” Seema said after winning the medal.

Beyond her athletic achievement, Seema also highlighted the financial and professional challenges faced by many Indian athletes. Despite representing the country and winning medals, she revealed that she has struggled to secure stable employment.

According to Seema, age restrictions prevented her from qualifying for certain government jobs despite her sporting accomplishments.

“I tried for a job earlier, but I did not get it. Now I am 27 years old, and according to the criteria, there is an age limit of 25 years. I don’t have any financial support, and that remains a big barrier. If I had a job, it would be extremely helpful,” she said.

Despite these difficulties, Seema expressed gratitude towards the organisations supporting her career. She credited the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Patiala, and JSW Sports for providing essential assistance in training and preparation. She also acknowledged her family’s continued support whenever additional resources were required.

The bronze medallist, who is also pursuing a PhD, used the opportunity to make a heartfelt appeal to policymakers, corporate organisations, and sports administrators to invest more in promising athletes.

She stressed that behind every international medal lies years of sacrifice involving financial hardship, mental challenges, strict nutrition, expensive training, and continuous dedication.

“If a child shows interest in sports and wants to pursue it, please support them. If institutions or corporate partners can help athletes, they should come forward because every medal is earned after overcoming enormous struggles,” Seema said.

Her inspiring journey serves as a reminder that sporting success is rarely achieved through talent alone. It is built upon perseverance, family sacrifices, institutional support, and an unbreakable determination to overcome obstacles.

Seema Kaliramna’s Commonwealth Games bronze medal will undoubtedly be remembered as a proud achievement for Indian athletics. Equally significant, however, is the powerful message she and her family have shared—that behind every podium finish stands a story of resilience, sacrifice, and hope for a stronger support system for the country’s future sporting champions.
