Heavy rainfall has disrupted rail connectivity to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and southern Assam after railway tracks near New Harangajao were damaged. Northeast Frontier Railway has launched restoration work on a war footing while train services remain affected and safety measures continue.
Rail connectivity between Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, southern Assam and the rest of the country has remained severely affected for nearly a week after continuous heavy rainfall damaged railway infrastructure along the strategically significant Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has intensified restoration work on a war footing, deploying engineering teams, railway personnel and heavy machinery to restore normal train operations at the earliest while ensuring passenger safety.
According to senior officials of the Northeast Frontier Railway, incessant rainfall in Assam’s Dima Hasao district caused the soil beneath two of the three railway tracks near New Harangajao station to subside over an approximately 300-metre stretch. The damage has significantly affected train operations on one of the Northeast’s most crucial railway corridors.
Officials stated that the continuous rainfall and unstable weather conditions have posed major challenges to restoration efforts. Despite these difficulties, engineering teams are working round the clock with advanced equipment to stabilize the affected area and repair the damaged tracks. Railway authorities have emphasized that safety remains the highest priority, and normal train services will resume only after the track is declared completely safe for operations.
The settlement of railway tracks on Line 1 and Line 2 near New Harangajao station has forced railway authorities to operate all train movements through the remaining functional Line 3. These operations are being conducted under strict supervision, with continuous monitoring and enhanced safety protocols to ensure the secure passage of trains through the vulnerable section.
In view of the ongoing restoration work, the Northeast Frontier Railway has cancelled the Guwahati–Silchar Express on Thursday and Friday. Several other passenger trains connecting Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and southern Assam have either been rescheduled, partially cancelled or regulated depending on operational conditions.
As an additional safety measure, railway authorities have suspended passenger train operations through the affected stretch during night hours between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. During daylight hours, trains are being permitted to pass through the damaged section only under regulated speed restrictions and continuous engineering supervision. Officials said these temporary measures are necessary to minimize risks until restoration work is fully completed.
The Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section is regarded as the only railway link connecting Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and large parts of southern Assam with the rest of India. Its strategic importance extends beyond passenger transportation, serving as the primary corridor for transporting food grains, petroleum products, construction materials, medicines and other essential commodities to the northeastern states.
Any prolonged disruption along this route has widespread consequences for both commuters and commercial supply chains. Delays in freight movement can impact the availability of essential goods across the region, while passengers continue to face inconvenience due to cancellations, rescheduling and extended travel times.
Railway officials have appealed to passengers to regularly check updated train schedules before commencing their journeys. The NFR is issuing continuous service updates as restoration work progresses and operational conditions change.
Monsoon-related disruptions have become an annual challenge for railway infrastructure across the Northeast. The region’s mountainous terrain, particularly in Dima Hasao district, remains highly vulnerable to landslides, soil erosion, flooding and waterlogging during the four-month monsoon season from June to September. These natural conditions frequently damage railway embankments, bridges, tracks and associated infrastructure, resulting in repeated interruptions to both passenger and freight services.
Experts note that maintaining uninterrupted railway connectivity in the Northeast remains particularly challenging due to the difficult topography and heavy seasonal rainfall. Restoration efforts often require specialized engineering solutions, slope stabilization and continuous monitoring to ensure long-term safety.
The Northeast Frontier Railway has reiterated its commitment to restoring the damaged section as quickly as possible without compromising safety standards. Officials said every available resource has been mobilized to expedite repairs, and restoration activities are continuing on a war footing despite adverse weather conditions.
