A Tripura University (TU)-incubated startup supplied over 2,000 litres of purified drinking water to flood-hit families in Assam using its patented mobile water purification technology. The humanitarian initiative highlights indigenous innovation, disaster relief, and emergency access to safe drinking water during floods.
A startup incubated at Tripura University has stepped forward to support flood-affected communities in Assam by supplying more than 2,000 litres of purified drinking water through its patented mobile water purification technology. The humanitarian initiative benefited around 30 families in Assam’s flood-ravaged Amguri region and adjoining areas, ensuring access to safe drinking water at a time when conventional water supply systems had been severely disrupted.
The relief operation was carried out by M.Tech student Ashim and InstaWater technician Santanu, who travelled to the flood-hit areas with the startup’s portable water purification unit. The technology enabled the team to purify contaminated floodwater and surface water directly at the point of use, providing immediate access to clean drinking water for families facing severe hardships.
Founder of InstaWater and Assistant Professor at Tripura University, Prof. Harjeet Nath, said the mobile purification system has been specifically designed for rapid deployment during floods, natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies. The compact and portable technology allows relief workers to produce safe drinking water in remote or inaccessible locations where regular water supply infrastructure has either collapsed or become contaminated.
“Access to safe drinking water is one of the most urgent needs during floods. Through indigenous technology developed in Tripura, our objective is to provide immediate relief to affected communities while reducing the risk of water-borne diseases. We remain committed to supporting disaster response efforts wherever required,” Prof. Nath said.
He noted that the initiative demonstrates how research and innovation developed within an academic institution can be transformed into practical, life-saving solutions during emergencies. The successful deployment in Assam also reflects the growing role of university-backed startups in addressing real-world challenges through technology-driven interventions.
According to Prof. Nath, InstaWater has been actively involved in disaster relief operations across different parts of the country since its inception. Using its portable and mobile water purification systems, the startup has consistently provided clean drinking water to communities affected by floods and other natural calamities.
The latest mission in Assam highlights the importance of indigenous innovation in disaster management, particularly in regions where floodwaters often contaminate traditional water sources and increase the risk of water-borne diseases. By enabling rapid purification of polluted water, the technology offers an effective and sustainable solution for emergency response agencies and humanitarian organisations.
