The Tripura HC has granted the state government a final deadline to submit teacher vacancy and recruitment data in government schools by August 11, 2026, warning of strict action if the information is not furnished, amid concerns over staffing shortages and vacant leadership posts.
The Tripura High Court has granted the state government one final opportunity to submit detailed information on teacher vacancies and recruitment in government schools, making it clear that it will take a “serious view” if the required data is not placed before the court by the next hearing. The matter, which has drawn attention to staffing shortages in the state’s education sector, will now be heard again on August 11, 2026.
The order was passed by a division bench comprising Chief Justice M. S. Ramachandra Rao and Justice Biswajit Palit while hearing a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) initiated by the High Court.
According to the order dated July 29, the bench accepted the request of the Advocate General and granted what it described as the “last chance” for the government to furnish the information sought in its earlier order issued on July 2, 2026.
The court observed, “As a last chance, at the request of the learned Advocate General, list the matter on 11.08.2026 to furnish the data sought for in the previous order passed by this Court on 02.07.2026. It is made clear that a serious view will be taken if the data is not furnished, as per the previous order.”
In its previous directive, the High Court had instructed the Advocate General to file a fresh affidavit responding to reports published in local newspapers regarding teacher vacancies, recruitment, and staffing conditions in government-run schools across Tripura.
The bench specifically sought details on the total number of teacher vacancies that existed as of May 8, 2026, along with the number of posts that had either been proposed for recruitment or had already been filled by the government.
The court also directed the state to respond to a report published in a local daily on June 15, which claimed that recruitment for the posts of headmaster, headmistress, and inspector of schools had remained suspended since 2018. The report further alleged that nearly 86 per cent of the state’s approximately 4,668 government schools were functioning without a headmaster or headmistress.
Another issue highlighted before the court concerned the reported abolition of 118 vacant posts of inspector of schools and 288 posts of headmaster and headmistress following the suspension of recruitment. The High Court directed that the government’s affidavit should clarify the status of these posts and respond to the claims made in the reports.
In addition, the bench sought an explanation regarding another newspaper report published on June 30, which alleged that several government schools across the state were operating with only two teachers, raising concerns about the quality of education and the ability of schools to manage academic and administrative responsibilities effectively.
The court directed that a copy of the June 30 report be supplied to the Advocate General for an appropriate response in the affidavit.
The ongoing proceedings underline the High Court’s concern over the functioning of government schools and the availability of adequate teaching and administrative staff. By seeking comprehensive data on vacancies and recruitment, the court aims to obtain a clearer picture of the staffing situation and assess the government’s efforts to address shortages in the education sector.

With the next hearing scheduled for August 11, 2026, the state government is expected to submit the complete information sought by the court.
