Benchmark domestic equity indices ended over one per cent higher today. The Sensex surged 889 points to close at 77,655. The Nifty gained 265 points to settle at 24,250.In the broader market at the National Stock Exchange, the Midcap 100 index rose over 0.8 per cent, while the Smallcap 100 index jumped nearly one and a half per cent.
Earlier, the markets opened higher, with stronger-than-expected industrial production growth data providing the catalyst for a positive start. Both benchmark indices sustained their upward momentum throughout the session, supported by renewed risk appetite.
In the Sensex pack, 25 out of 30 companies registered gains. Among the top performers, Hindustan Unilever climbed 4.7 per cent, Infosys rose four and a half per cent and Trent added over two and a half per cent. In contrast, Adani Ports shed 3.2 per cent, Mahindra and Mahindra dipped one and a half per cent and PowerGrid lost 0.9 per cent.
In the sectoral indices on the BSE, 20 out of 27 sectors ended in positive zone. Among the top gainers, IT rose 2.4 per cent, Metal advanced almost 2.3 per cent, and Focused IT gained 1.9 per cent. In contrast, MidSmall Private Banks Quality Tilt fell over 0.6 per cent, Services dropped half a per cent, and Realty dipped 0.3 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as shares of 2 thousand 593 companies advanced, 1 thousand 652 declined, and 179 remained unchanged.
