Pankaj Tripathi reveals the challenges of portraying former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Main Atal Hoon, explaining how he shifted his focus from mimicry to capturing Vajpayee’s thoughts, wisdom, personality, and inspiring journey to deliver an authentic performance.
Actor Pankaj Tripathi has opened up about the creative challenges he faced while portraying former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the biographical film Main Atal Hoon. As the acclaimed actor prepares for the release of his upcoming project Mirzapur: The Movie, he reflected on his experience of bringing one of India’s most respected political leaders to the big screen and explained how he eventually changed his approach to the demanding role.
Tripathi shared his thoughts during his appearance on the chat show Shekhar Tonite, hosted by actor and television personality Shekhar Suman. During the conversation, he spoke candidly about the pressure of portraying a well-known historical figure and admitted that the role initially left him uncertain about his performance.
According to Tripathi, he spent considerable time preparing for the character by reading numerous books about Atal Bihari Vajpayee and watching recordings of his speeches. However, despite his extensive research, he found one aspect particularly difficult.
“I read a lot of books on Atal Ji. I saw his old speeches. It was very challenging because I am very bad at mimicry,” the actor said. He admitted that he was unsure about how closely he would be able to recreate Vajpayee’s unique speaking style, expressions and mannerisms.
Tripathi recalled that one of the scenes featured in the film’s trailer was actually shot on the very first day of filming. At that stage, he was still trying to understand how much of Vajpayee’s physical mannerisms he could realistically portray.
He revealed that when he saw the trailer featuring that scene, he became anxious. “I was holding my head. I said, ‘Why did they put this in the trailer?'” he recalled, explaining that he was worried audiences might focus too heavily on whether he perfectly resembled the former Prime Minister.
The National Award-winning actor said his perspective changed as filming progressed. Instead of concentrating on imitation, he decided to focus on understanding Vajpayee’s personality, thoughts and philosophy.
Tripathi explained that he realised a person’s true identity lies beyond physical appearance. According to him, Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s legacy is defined by his wisdom, ideas, leadership and remarkable political journey rather than only his voice or gestures.
He also acknowledged that portraying iconic personalities in Indian cinema often comes with immense public expectations. Audiences frequently compare actors with the real-life figures they portray and judge performances based on visual resemblance.
Despite this challenge, Tripathi believed the emotional depth and internal world of Vajpayee offered greater opportunities for storytelling. While speeches and public appearances are well documented, he noted that the thoughts and emotions of the former Prime Minister during private moments remain largely unknown.
The actor described this unexplored dimension as the most demanding yet rewarding aspect of his performance in Main Atal Hoon. By focusing on Vajpayee’s character, values and inner journey rather than relying solely on mimicry, Tripathi sought to present a more authentic and meaningful portrayal of one of India’s most admired leaders.
