Lionel Messi became the first to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup matches as Argentina beat Jordan 3-1 in its Group J finale today. It means Messi has been scoring at least 1 goal in each of his last 7 World Cup matches he played.
The Jordan goal was the 7th straight match in that scoring streak. Messi came off the bench to score from a free kick in the 80th minute, extending his men’s World Cup record to 19 goals.
Before this match, Messi was one of three players to score in six straight World Cup games along with French footballer Just Fontaine and Brazilian footballer Jairzinho.
Despite his illustrious career, Messi has never won the World Cup Golden Boot but now he leads this year’s scoring chart with six goals, two ahead of French Kylian Mbappé, Brazilian Vinícius Júnior and Norwegian player Erling Haaland.
