Japanese PM Takaichi will visit New Delhi from July 1-3 for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders will strengthen bilateral cooperation, trade, investment, Indo-Pacific security, strategic partnership, and discuss key regional and global issues.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is set to undertake her first official visit to India after assuming office, travelling to New Delhi from July 1 to July 3 to participate in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The high-level meeting is expected to further deepen the longstanding Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two nations while expanding cooperation across trade, investment, security, technology, innovation, and regional stability.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Takaichi will visit India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit is expected to provide both leaders with an opportunity to review the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and identify new areas of cooperation in response to evolving regional and global developments.

The upcoming summit follows Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit, where both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic ties. The MEA said the reciprocal visit by Prime Minister Takaichi reflects the shared determination of India and Japan to elevate their Special Strategic and Global Partnership to new heights.

Apart from reviewing bilateral cooperation, the leaders are expected to exchange views on significant regional and international developments, particularly developments in the Indo-Pacific region, where both countries share a common vision of ensuring a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based maritime order.

Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi had earlier met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France on June 16. Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the growing momentum in India-Japan relations and reiterated that both countries would continue expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, with particular emphasis on trade, investment, economic growth, and technological collaboration.

The visit also follows the recent trip to New Delhi by Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who met Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. During those discussions, both sides reaffirmed the importance of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

Japanese officials have emphasized that the two countries are actively implementing the Japan-India Joint Vision for the Next 10 Years, announced during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Japan last year. The roadmap includes enhanced cooperation in defence and security, advanced technologies, economic resilience, infrastructure development, innovation, investment, digital transformation, and people-to-people exchanges.

Both governments have also agreed to intensify collaboration on economic security, resilient supply chains, clean energy, knowledge sharing, and emerging technologies. These initiatives are expected to contribute to sustainable economic growth while reinforcing regional stability amid evolving geopolitical challenges.

India and Japan continue to work closely under the framework of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) and India’s strategic initiatives, including the Act East Policy, Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR), and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI). The convergence of these strategic visions has significantly strengthened bilateral cooperation on maritime security, connectivity, infrastructure development, disaster resilience, and regional economic integration.

The friendship between India and Japan extends beyond strategic cooperation, with deep historical, cultural, and civilizational ties that have evolved over decades. Mutual trust, democratic values, and a shared commitment to a peaceful Indo-Pacific continue to serve as the foundation of the bilateral relationship.

As Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrives in New Delhi next week, expectations remain high that the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit will produce concrete outcomes across trade, investment, security, innovation, and regional cooperation. The meeting is expected to further consolidate one of Asia’s most important strategic partnerships while reinforcing both countries’ shared commitment to peace, stability, economic prosperity, and a resilient Indo-Pacific region.
