Operation Sindoor’s psychological impact continues to shape Pakistan’s military strategy as reports suggest increased defence spending, military salary hikes, and policy changes under Asim Munir. Officials claim these measures aim to restore troop morale despite growing economic pressure on ordinary Pakistanis.

The psychological impact of Operation Sindoor, India’s precision military operation conducted in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, continues to dominate strategic discussions across the region. According to officials familiar with the developments, the operation has reportedly had a significant effect on the morale of Pakistan’s armed forces, prompting a series of policy decisions aimed at restoring confidence within the military establishment.

Officials claim that although Pakistan publicly portrayed the aftermath of Operation Sindoor as a strategic success, internal assessments reportedly painted a different picture. The operation is said to have created widespread concern within Pakistan’s military ranks and other security agencies, leading to efforts by the country’s leadership to strengthen morale among serving personnel.

According to officials, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir sought elevation to the rank of Field Marshal shortly after the operation. The promotion, only the second such appointment in Pakistan’s history, was reportedly intended to project an image of military success and reassure both the armed forces and the public that Pakistan had emerged victorious despite India’s military action.

Security officials further claim that the move was designed not only to reinforce confidence within the Pakistan Army but also among other security agencies engaged in ongoing counterinsurgency operations against militant organisations such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Officials allege that Pakistan has been witnessing declining morale among security personnel, with reports of desertions in certain units involved in prolonged operations. They suggest that these developments, combined with Operation Sindoor’s psychological impact, have increased pressure on the country’s military leadership to introduce measures aimed at retaining personnel.

One of the most significant decisions reportedly taken after Operation Sindoor was an 18 percent increase in Pakistan’s defence budget for fiscal year 2026. The federal government allocated nearly PKR 3 trillion for defence, accounting for approximately 16 percent of total federal expenditure, making it one of the country’s largest-ever military allocations.

According to officials, the increase came despite concerns within the civilian government over Pakistan’s fragile economic condition. They allege that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s administration initially resisted the proposal but eventually approved the higher military allocation amid pressure from the armed forces.

The expanded defence budget reportedly came at the expense of public development programmes. Officials state that allocations under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) were reduced significantly, leaving only around PKR 1 trillion available for infrastructure development, education projects, healthcare initiatives and local welfare schemes.

Provincial governments were also reportedly instructed to reduce development spending, while financial surpluses from Punjab and Sindh were redirected to support federal expenditures. At the same time, energy and utility subsidies were reportedly scaled back, resulting in increased electricity and gas costs for ordinary citizens.

To finance the expanded defence expenditure, officials say the government established an ambitious tax collection target of approximately PKR 15.26 trillion, increasing pressure on businesses and taxpayers across the country.

Despite these financial measures, officials maintain that restoring confidence within the armed forces remained a key priority. Intelligence sources cited by officials claim that Pakistan introduced a 25 percent salary increase for military personnel across all ranks. The revised pay structure reportedly received immediate approval from Army Chief Asim Munir and has already been implemented.

Officials argue that the salary revision serves two objectives: improving morale after Operation Sindoor and discouraging experienced personnel from leaving military service amid continuing security challenges in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Military analysts believe Operation Sindoor represented a strategically significant operation due to its reported targeting of terrorist infrastructure associated with groups including Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba. The operation demonstrated India’s ability to conduct precision strikes against identified terror facilities within a short timeframe.

According to officials, the psychological consequences of Operation Sindoor continue to influence Pakistan’s military planning. They contend that the government’s increased defence spending, military pay revisions and symbolic leadership decisions are intended to reinforce confidence within the armed forces, even as critics argue that these policies place additional economic burdens on ordinary citizens.

While Islamabad has consistently maintained its own narrative regarding the events surrounding Operation Sindoor, Indian officials continue to describe the operation as a successful counterterrorism mission whose strategic and psychological effects remain evident in Pakistan’s subsequent military and fiscal decisions.
