Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has been honoured with the Special Award for Exceptional Leadership in Elevating UK-India Relations at the prestigious Annual UK-India Awards 2026 in London. The award recognises his significant contribution to strengthening diplomatic, economic and strategic ties between India and the United Kingdom at a time when both countries are entering a new phase of bilateral cooperation.
Receiving the honour before an audience of more than 300 policymakers, diplomats, business executives and industry leaders, Goyal described the recognition as a tribute to everyone who has contributed to building stronger relations between the two nations.
Expressing gratitude after receiving the award, Goyal said he was deeply honoured to receive the prestigious recognition. He added that the award belonged not only to him but also to the many individuals and institutions working tirelessly to deepen India-UK relations across governments, businesses, academia, culture and the vibrant Indian diaspora.
“The best innings of the India-UK partnership are yet to come,” Goyal remarked, expressing confidence that the relationship between the two countries would continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.
The minister’s remarks come at a significant moment as the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is scheduled to come into effect on July 15, marking a historic milestone in economic cooperation between the two countries. The agreement is expected to further enhance trade, investment, market access and business opportunities while strengthening supply chain resilience and boosting economic growth on both sides.
Addressing the gathering, Goyal highlighted the expanding strategic, economic and technological partnership between India and the United Kingdom. He said both nations are well-positioned to collaborate across a broad range of sectors, including trade, innovation, advanced technology, manufacturing, education, clean energy and emerging industries.
He emphasised that India’s rapid economic growth under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created unprecedented opportunities for international collaboration. According to Goyal, India’s transformation into one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies has made it an attractive destination for global investors and strategic partners, including the United Kingdom.
The Commerce Minister noted that bilateral relations have evolved significantly over recent years through stronger economic engagement, increasing business partnerships and expanding people-to-people connections. He said these developments are laying the foundation for a new chapter in India-UK relations built on shared democratic values, mutual trust and long-term prosperity.
Goyal also congratulated the other recipients of the Annual UK-India Awards 2026, acknowledging their valuable contributions towards strengthening cooperation between the two countries. He praised individuals and organisations from both nations for promoting collaboration across multiple sectors and fostering closer cultural, educational and commercial ties.
The Annual UK-India Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in promoting bilateral relations and recognise leaders who have played a vital role in advancing cooperation between India and the United Kingdom. The event brings together influential policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics and community leaders committed to enhancing the long-standing partnership.
With the implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement approaching, expectations are high that bilateral trade volumes will witness substantial growth. The agreement is expected to create new opportunities for businesses, improve market access, encourage innovation and facilitate investment in key sectors ranging from technology and manufacturing to financial services and education.
Reiterating his optimism about the future, Goyal stressed that the India-UK relationship is entering one of its most promising phases. He said the expanding partnership, backed by strong political leadership and growing economic cooperation, would continue to deliver benefits for businesses, investors and citizens of both countries.
