Tripura’s Dr. Sourabh Paul, a native of Belonia, has secured a prestigious ISRO-funded research project worth Rs. 29.93 lakh. The project focuses on developing advanced image-matching algorithms for satellite image analysis, remote sensing, disaster management, and space research, bringing pride to Tripura and India’s scientific community.
In a moment of pride for Tripura and the entire North-Eastern region, Dr. Sourabh Paul, a native of Belonia in South Tripura district, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a prestigious research project funded by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The project, valued at Rs. 29.93 lakh, highlights the growing contribution of young researchers from the region to India’s scientific and technological advancement.
Born and raised in Belonia, Dr. Paul completed his early education in the town before embarking on an academic journey marked by dedication, perseverance, and excellence. His pursuit of higher education led him to earn a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree from Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT). He subsequently completed his Master of Technology (M.Tech.) from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala, and later obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from the National Institute of Technology Rourkela, specializing in signal and image processing.
His academic accomplishments reflect years of hard work and determination. From a small town in Tripura to some of the country’s premier technical institutions, Dr. Paul’s journey serves as an inspiring example for aspiring students and researchers.
Currently associated with Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai, Dr. Paul is actively involved in advanced research in image processing, remote sensing, and deep learning technologies. His latest achievement came when ISRO sanctioned a research project titled, “Design and Development of Algorithm for Illumination, Scale, Translation and Rotation Invariant Image Matching.”
The project aims to develop sophisticated image-matching algorithms capable of accurately identifying and analyzing images despite variations in illumination, scale, translation, and rotation. Such technology plays a crucial role in satellite image interpretation and remote sensing applications, where images captured from different angles, lighting conditions, and resolutions need to be compared accurately.
Experts believe that the research could significantly enhance the efficiency of satellite-based observation systems. The outcomes of the project are expected to benefit several sectors, including environmental monitoring, disaster management, land-use analysis, agricultural assessment, and national space research initiatives. By improving the accuracy of image analysis, the project could contribute to strengthening India’s indigenous technological capabilities in remote sensing and image processing.
Apart from its scientific significance, the project is also expected to create opportunities for students and young researchers to gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge technologies with practical applications. Such initiatives play an important role in fostering innovation and research culture among the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Sourabh Paul acknowledged the continuous support of his teachers, mentors, colleagues, and family members throughout his academic journey. He stated that receiving an ISRO-funded research project despite coming from a small town like Belonia demonstrates that determination, quality education, and hard work can help individuals achieve excellence regardless of their background.
