Tripura celebrates twin milestones as the state wins three prestigious National Panchayat Awards and renowned cultural icon Panchali Debbarma is nominated to the Board of Governors of the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC). The achievements highlight grassroots development, women empowerment, cultural preservation, and Tripura’s growing national recognition.

Tripura has added another remarkable chapter to its development and cultural journey with two significant achievements that have brought national recognition to the state. While the state has earned three prestigious National Panchayat Awards for excellence in local governance and rural development, noted cultural personality Panchali Debbarma has been nominated to the Board of Governors of the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), further enhancing Tripura’s presence on the national cultural platform.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha described the three National Panchayat Awards as a matter of immense pride for the state. He stated that the awards reflect the success of the government’s development-oriented policies, active public participation, women’s empowerment initiatives, and the collective vision of building “Ek Tripura, Shrestha Tripura, Unnata Tripura.”

Among the award-winning institutions, Sepahijala Zilla Parishad secured the distinction of being recognized as the Best District Panchayat in India, a prestigious honour that highlights its outstanding performance in local administration, development planning, and public service delivery.

In another significant achievement, Kanchanbari Panchayat under Kumarghat in Unakoti district was awarded the title of Best Healthy Panchayat, recognizing its efforts in promoting sanitation, healthcare awareness, and community well-being. Meanwhile, Baikunthapur Panchayat under Hezamara in West Tripura district secured the joint third position in the Women-Friendly Panchayat category, reflecting the state’s commitment to gender-inclusive governance and women’s empowerment.

The Chief Minister met individuals associated with these achievements and congratulated them for bringing national acclaim to Tripura. He emphasized that these recognitions serve as important milestones in strengthening grassroots democracy and ensuring sustainable rural development across the state.

Adding to the celebrations, Tripura’s cultural landscape received a major boost with the nomination of Panchali Debbarma, a distinguished folk and classical vocalist, choreographer, and cultural ambassador, to the Board of Governors of the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur. The appointment was officially confirmed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, on May 4, 2026, following approval from the Union Culture Minister.

Born in Malaynagar, Agartala, Panchali Debbarma has emerged as one of Tripura’s most respected cultural figures. Trained in vocal music at Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith, Lucknow, and Rabindra Nritya at Bangiya Sangeet Parishad, she has dedicated her life to preserving and promoting both tribal and Bengali cultural traditions.

Her artistic contributions span Hojagiri dance, Kokborok music, Bengali folk songs, devotional performances, and modern musical compositions. Through acclaimed albums such as Bhubaneswari and Chupkhata, she has reached audiences across India. Her performances at Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi, Bharat Parv, and international cultural events in Bangladesh have earned her widespread recognition.

Panchali Debbarma’s achievements extend beyond the performing arts. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Art and Culture in 2020 by Brampton International University during the Atma Nirbhar Bharat National Conference in Indore. She has also actively contributed to social welfare initiatives and youth development programmes while conducting free folk dance workshops to nurture emerging talent.

Her inclusion in the NEZCC Board is expected to strengthen Tripura’s representation in regional cultural policymaking and provide greater visibility to the state’s rich heritage, tribal traditions, and artistic diversity. Alongside representatives from other northeastern states, Panchali Debbarma will play an important role in promoting cultural exchange and preserving the unique identity of the Northeast.
