Harington, who portrayed the iconic character Jon Snow throughout the HBO blockbuster series, shared the personal details during a conversation with his former co-star Peter Dinklage for Variety. The actor said that entering rehab at a critical point in his career was a necessary step for his well-being, even though it meant missing the highly anticipated conclusion of one of television’s most successful shows.
According to Harington, he checked into a rehabilitation facility just as the first episode of the eighth and final season premiered. The actor spent six weeks receiving treatment and focusing on his recovery from anxiety and alcohol addiction.
“I decided to go to rehab as Episode 1 was airing, and I was there for six weeks. I needed to get sober,” Harington said during the interview.
The 39-year-old actor explained that the decision was not easy, especially given the enormous media attention surrounding the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’. As one of the show’s leading stars, he was expected to participate in extensive promotional activities and media appearances.
Reflecting on that period, Harington said he understood there was significant pressure for him to be present during the show’s farewell campaign. However, he ultimately prioritized his health over professional obligations.
“I was like, ‘Wait a minute, there’s loads of press that needs to be done. You need to be front and centre.’ But it was a good decision to go, ‘Actually, I’m checking out. I can’t do this.’ So I didn’t see the last season,” he said.
Following the conclusion of ‘Game of Thrones’, Harington took an extended break from acting and public life. He noted that his plans to gradually return to work were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, creating an unusual period of reflection and personal growth.
