Fresh erosion along the Deo River in Kumarghat has triggered concern among residents as riverbanks continue to collapse near the Deo Bridge–Old Shibtali road. Locals allege crores spent on anti-erosion works have failed to provide a lasting solution, prompting demands for permanent protection and improved drainage infrastructure.

Fresh erosion along the Deo River in Kumarghat has once again triggered concern among local residents, who allege that crores of rupees spent on anti-erosion measures over the years have failed to provide a lasting solution to the recurring problem.

The latest erosion has been reported along the stretch of road connecting Deo Bridge and Old Shibtali after the river’s water level increased following recent rainfall. Large sections of the riverbank have reportedly started collapsing into the river, creating fear among residents living in nearby areas. Local people fear that if immediate and effective measures are not taken, the erosion could pose a serious threat to roads, houses, and other infrastructure situated close to the river.

Residents expressed frustration over the continuing erosion despite repeated government interventions and expenditure on river protection works. According to locals, the situation has become increasingly severe in recent years, raising questions about the effectiveness of previous anti-erosion projects.

Speaking to the media, local resident Shashanka Chowdhury said that the people of the area have been battling river erosion for nearly four decades. He claimed that while the problem has existed for around 40 years, it has become significantly more serious over the last three years. Chowdhury urged the authorities to implement a permanent solution rather than temporary measures. He also emphasized the need for constructing a proper drainage system along the riverbank to help reduce the impact of erosion and improve water management in the area.

In response to the growing concerns, Executive Engineer Ranjit Debbarma of the Unakoti District Flood Control Department visited the affected site and interacted with local residents. During the visit, he listened to their grievances and assessed the extent of the damage caused by the fresh erosion.

Officials informed residents that an amount of Rs 5 lakh has been sanctioned as an immediate measure to check further riverbank collapse. However, locals maintained that temporary repairs alone would not be sufficient and reiterated their demand for a long-term and sustainable erosion-control plan.

Meanwhile, local MLA Bhagaban Chandra Das also visited the erosion-hit area and assured residents that necessary steps would be taken to address the issue. He stated that efforts would be made to identify and implement a permanent solution to protect the riverbank and ensure the safety of local communities.
